SYTY Engine Block?

Re: SYTY Engine Block?

Thanks guys. Let me rephrase this, what is specific to a Syty engine compared to a regular 4.3 (Internally)?

I'll need to know this information for my Engine rebuilding class at school.

Thanks,

Re: SYTY Engine Block?

syty blocks have nodular main caps is what my machine shop told me.

But if you go to the 4-bolt, then that is moot correct?

I want to buy a non-vortec, external balance 4.3 and build it. Are those the only things we need?

yes, those are the caps, not the block though.

Thanks,

If youre talking what different between a complete engine sitting on a stand, SyTy vs standard S10 LB4, then its...

  • nodular iron main caps
  • lower compression dished pistons
  • different head gaskets

you can use any normal (pre 1996) 4.3L engine block to start as a foundation for a build. Just make note that the mid-80's (specifically 1985) have a 2 piece rear main seal. There may be other slight variations, but thats the only significant one.

Re: SYTY Engine Block?

May be a dumb question (and a lil off topic due that it's not "internal"), but...
Do regular 4.3 blocks have the holes for the turbo oil feed/return? And the return hole for the coolant?
Do any other 4.3 vehicles utilize those two holes?

Yes/No.

The pressure side utilizes a port on the drivers side of the block if I recall, that usually has a threaded plug in it on standard trucks.

there is no return in the block. Its in the oil pan that is "specific" by part number to the SyTys, but is really nothing more than a stock 4x4 pan with a threaded bung bolted to it.

Its been so long since Ive seen a truck with a stock turbo, I forget how the coolant lines were routed to the turbo, but I believe its the same scenario basically.

Re: SYTY Engine Block?

The hole for the oil feed to the turbo is there on blocks it is just plugged off. It is located above the on block oil filter area. The return goes into the oil pan via a fitting into the oil pan.
The coolant is from the lower intake via a fitting there just below the thermostat housing. The other end goes into the side of the block thru a fitting that is usally plugged off on a normal block but has a fitting for our application. The coolant circuit for the turbo is set up so that "convection" can continue to cool the turbo after the engine is turned off.

Re: SYTY Engine Block?

Maybe a little off topic, but would a later model 4.3 be better to rebuild than a syty original engine?

search, you should find your answer, its been brought up many times before. If I could remember the general consensus answer I would tell ya, but I cant at the moment.

96+ balance shaft motors have been built before, I just cant remember the pros and cons, although I do recall discussion about the cranks being weaker.

Re: SYTY Engine Block?

How about knock sensor hole? Syty specific or do all non balance shaft blocks have it in the same location?

I think Dave's beating a dead horse smiley will come in use here

:horse:

THERE IS NOTHING SPECIAL OR SYTY SPECIFIC ABOUT THE BLOCKS! PERIOD! NO SPECIAL HOLES! THEY DIDN'T CAST SPECIAL BLOCKS FOR OUR TRUCKS!

i figured caps might help since you apparently missed the first few posts in the thread where is was stated that there we no differences in the block   everything used was existing, there is no special drilling or machine work needed to use a regular 1993 LB4 block or a SyTy LB4 block
