Syclone 10pt Cage

Since my good buddy Harmon is enroute back home I am going to steal his thunder a bit.

Over the weekend him and myself installed a 10pt cage in his syclone. Being my 2nd cage (my ty being first), and my first 10 pt (my ty is just a roll bar) it was a lot of fun. We busted our ass for 3 days but I think the results will be well worth it. The only thing left that is planned to be added is swing out door bar, right now they are solid.

The NHRA rules were followed and should the need arise the cage should have no problem being certified.

And here is the trick of the trade in terms of how to weld the tops of the bars.

Somewhat hard to see and very hard to photgraph well but the cage is built VERY tight to the cab. Before the door bars were installed the cage did not protude into getting in/out and sitting in the truck at all.

All 6 points go through the body and are welded directly to the frame.

In total between the 2 of us, we spent about 40+ hrs just on the cage. Just to give a reference of the work involved.

I personally am very happy with it and hope it serves Harmon well in the near future. It was my personal drive on this one to see how far would would tuck the cage and "hide" it and I think we did very well.

Re: Syclone 10pt Cage

Just got back from visiting with Harmon in Nashville, on his return back to FL. This cage looks very impressive and I can tell you, Harmon is very pleased with it, as well he should be given the quality of work and its appearance.

Jeff, just a personal and public thanks to you for all you do for the SyTy community. Always willing to help others and go above and beyond expectations are descriptions that surface when your name is voiced in my presence. Thanks for loading the Ostrich with my custom tune.....time now to make some heads roll here in Clarksville .

I bet he can climb through the window easier than twist around that door bar . Looking good either way . lol

I built the door bar to the customers specs. He did mention a diet might be in order though.

Looks great! One thing I was wondering last week is why most people do a hoop for a halo(guessing on the term here) and not going from the main hoop to the front floor as one bar like you did. Any words on this?

top notch work ,i like how close the rear cross bar sits to cab . kinda sucks having to do bars out the rear window ., but theres no other ways to do it that ive seen

Just a personal preference. We felt it was easier and would look better the way we did it. Keep in mind a LOT of cages you see start as off the shelf universal kits. IMO they work, but look like dog poo once installed.

If you could see the cage up close with door bars removed or swing out, you would be impressed with how tight all the bars are. It was my personal goal/challenge and I was happy with the outcome.

The other way is a funny car cage, it is detailed in the rule book rather in depth. I don't think a funny car cage would be fun to drive on the street though.

Re: Syclone 10pt Cage

I realize you wanted easy access but about those door bars. I believe the door bar must intersect between the shoulder and elbow. Maybe Harmon is kinda short? I dunno but that horizontal door bar i think is supposed to be on a downward angle from the rear.

then again if you can get a cert on it go for it. I just am not so sure.

IF the truck isnt under 9.99 then anything will pass at a local track.

You are 100% right on the spec and the door bars fullfill that requirement. There is zero specs on how many bends a door bar has though.

One thing I learned yesterday is, once you have a 10 pt cage you are REQUIRED to have a window net, regardless of the ET or being certified. Granted most tracks won't know that or enforce it.

Re: Syclone 10pt Cage

Im VERY happy with the way it turned out. I did one hell of a job building it while jeff sat in his chair drinking tea and eating crumpets pointing at things for me to do.J/K :rotf:

I have to give mad props to jeff for helping me get this done and doing superior workmanship with care that i could not have gotten locally or even with a summit cage kit. He also forgot to mention we also built a cross member with a driveshaft hoop to replace the torsion bar cross member. Going to be ripping out the front suspension and adding some jsm tubular a-arms and coilovers this weekend with c6 brakes...cant wait to get her back on the road!

I got her unloaded after work today.....im still happier then a pig in chit!

Now, time to go fast ;)
