stock torque converter question

I recently purchased a low mile back up transmission for my typhoon. The shifting felt slow and delayed ( about a month ago). I continued to drive truck.

I ended up doing a cable adjustment. Truck felt a little better as far as shifting.

Last night felt like 1st gear went out as the truck sees some RPM before it engages.

What my question is... I need a converter. I have a original gm unit I pulled from my syclone ( that trans went) is the converter trash too?

Also, I have the same GM converter in the typhoon currently. I suppose that is no good as well? As they may have wearings inside?.

So where should I turn for a converter? They are 2100 stall correct? Just looking for some input. I dont need anything more than OE. Thanks

At the bare minimum you would have your converter flushed, but even doing so, you cannot get all the crap out of it. That is why tranny shop will not guaranty their rebuilt trans unless you install a reconditioned converter or a new converter.
A stock replacement converter are pretty cheap, less than $100. Do some research.

I would get a higher stall that stock, 2400 would be great & not affect gas mileage.

Different trans (4L60E) but I had my trans rebuilt, installed a stock Corvette converter, 2400 stall.
& my mileage did not change one bit.

97 Silverado, stock stall was pathetic, I could brake stall to 1400 RPM.

Now, after the converter change, the acceleration is much better & like I said, mileage did not change with the higher stall.

If you go to a trans shop, they should be able to look up the stalls for a Corvette 1991, & I believe it would have a slightly higher stall & they should be able to order one for you for not much $$.

OK. I have a low mile trans here ready to be plugged in.

I am just looking to get the right part which I would need to have this all installed in a one shot deal.

I briefly looked on amazon just to get basic prices and a idea on converters.

A member on here send a note on a shop that will open the converter up, clean it and add any parts if needed. Which is one option.

I do have my original syclone converter that is already out, laying around and doing nothing. Thing is place is not open so I won't know what I am up against until Monday at the earliest. Of course I could always buy new which I do/did plan on doing I was just looking for a reccomendation and confirmation on stall. Always thought the stock stall was 2100 rpm.

Yes, stock stall is 2100, if you want just a tad bit better acceleration w/out hurting mileage, 2400 stall would be great.:2cents:

I don't know how far you are from Strousburg (northeast PA) but if I remember correctly there's a trany shop out there that can rebuild converters and I think they can increase the stall a little for you.

Re: stock torque converter question

Not entirely too far. (70MILEStroudsberg)

BIG MIKE referred me to a shop down by him called PATS CONVERTERS. They open Monday.

I found a few converters on AMAZON. Why amazon? I have a account and just searched "700r4 converter" I found some "TORCCO" brand for $100-$150 and another off brand for $150-$200 which is a far cry from the $900 I dumped on my converter for syclone :)rotf:big power:rotf:.)

Tomorrow I might know a little bit more as far as what I am going to do. Either see if one of my already out converters I can use as a core as see what the price is to cut/chop/rebuild or just pull the trigger on a off brand converter and hope it holds up. I am not looking to put real trick converter in the truck at all.

Something that stalls 2100-2400, full lock up and probably a 12 inch size?
