Stereo Install Pics Wanted

GM TURBO

Sell Out
I want to see pics of some stereo installs. I am not talking about throwing a box in the cargo area with 2 - 12 Inch MTX. I mean a nice custom job. Maybe a false floor. Subs installed in the side panels. No Bazooka Bass Turds. It doesn't even have to be big. I am good with a single 10 if it is done in a unique way.

Here is what I am thinking--On the side opposite of the spare tire installing a 10 (prefer a 12 but I might be limited) firing in the direction of the spare. Maybe running the box over the rear tire and to the back - keeping it as stealth as possible. I don't know who has seen Dameon (sp?) from Milwaukee - Garnet/Grey Ty - but he has a beautiful set-up. I don't know if he reads the boards or not - but he removed the spare and has 2 -12s on opposite sides. Very cool looking. His isn't as stealth as I would want - but I would like to see pics like that. Anyone can buy a box from Best Buy and throw it in the back.

dave! i have a sick sub box that you might like... i used to have it in my blazer, but pulled it out to sell the blazer. you'd have to pull the spare tire out though. its a pretty big box, but its about as stealth as they come. its too hard to explain, so when i get some pics ill send em to you. the box holds 2 12's, and is set up so they are down firing. more later...

I don't know who's this is, but it's one of the nicer installs I've seen in a Ty-

S-10's are pretty popular for autosound stuff. You should be able to find quite a few nice bed installs with tons of subs.

I've always made my own boxes, though nothing too fancy. I'm kinda in the process of designing a box for a single 12" behind the driver seat, with the amp and stuff mounted above the jack. I hate hacking up factory stuff, even moreso with a Sy, so I'm going to have it use existing stuff for mounting points and such.

I threw together a crappy box for a crappy pair of 12" Kickers for a friend's old (84?) Ranger. The back of the cab juts out below the window (like the trim piece on S-trucks), so I actually had to make the box to fit inside that. Then I cut holes in the back of the box for the magnets, then put another shorter (under that piece sticking out) piece of MDF on the back. Do some measuring, and you'll see that the depth of a 12" and couple layers of 3/4" MDF is a tight fit behind the seat no matter how you do it. One way you can cut down on that is to use fiberglass for the rear, since it has the cab walls for bracing...

Got any more pics? That is the perfect sub enclosure that I'm looking for. Any chance the shop could make another one?

I plan on putting the amps in the tailgate. Do you have woofers on the other side as well?

It looks like you have speaker pods on top of the woofers facing the back seat yes?

Very sweet system, one of the nicer ones that I've seen and liked.

If you don't have a place to host any additional pics you may have, I'll put them up on my page.

I have tonnes of pics. The entire install is done by me and I took pics alone the way. I have an identical box on the other side. The rear speakers are for the rear channels in the 5.1 surround sound. I also have another amp in the tailgate that runs the center channel. That one I don't show. Just finishing the custom center console now. I will post more pics when I get back from Vegas. I have to catch my flight in a few hours.

Just a thought...Most of these pics in here have the subs facing upward. Along with my sy i have a s-10 blazer 83'... I'v been in this stuff for awile (car audiio), I had 3 JL 10w6's in a triagle shape facing the floor. Then i was able to build a nice custom panal so to speak that flat from side to side. YOu could then still use your back to place stuff on. The way to do this job, is facing the subs toward the floor--it sounds incorrect, but it is the ULTIMATE way of installing subs in a a ty. My fricken roof literally moved up and down in my blazer and was so lound inside that when turned up, blurred you vision due to the sound waves. Could never drive with it up as you may have guessed. Just my oppinion, but facing the subs down is the way to do it--as well it hides the install for the theifs. Some of these others are extremely nice, but all i have to do is look in the back and see what they got. Any questions email me. Good luck!

There's some serious systems 'round here. I'm wanting to upgrade/change my system in the spring to more stealth look w/o sacrificing sound quality also. Right now my amps are mounted on the cargo plate behind the rear seat and I have 2 DEI 10" in boxes taking up the cargo area. Sounds pretty good as a system (albeit my MB Quart 6x9's in the factory spot sound uncharacteristically doody) but not THAT good considering the monster footprint it has. I appreciate this topic and will follow everyone's discussion/opinions/ideas with an open ear...thanks.

Dave,

That is what I wanted to see. It is a little more than I wanted to do but as far as the way the subs are mounted it is almost exactly what I wanted to do. I would probably cover them in a black fabric so they would match the interior. Or maybe put on speaker grills similiar to home speakers that would snap on. It looks as though you took the molding/fabric/carpet below the rear window - or is that my eyes playing tricks on me? If you have any more pics of the install that you could forward along to me that would be great. What did you use to build the boxes? I probably wouldn't go quite that in depth for my own install but that is gorgeous - AND you did it all yourself. Outstanding work.

I busted the paint off my roof with my box! I took it as an opportuninty to shave the roof rack and Dynamat the whole damn thing but for a while it sucked cuz the rust started on it. Mine is also an '89 which means the paint sucks anyways but the bass did it in for good. I have 6 Cerwin Vega 12's (old ass orange foam 200 RMS one's) in a 3/4 MDF box facing down into the floor. I built the box specifically to be able to lay down with a 3" gap for the woofers to breath. I also pull it out and use it to jam with a Hartkey 7500 Head and my Ibanez 5 string. It is very simple: 3 12's, 3 12's, 2 cu ft of air, sealed individule chambers, with the side walls over hanging the front by 3" wich leaves plenty of room for the walffle grilles and air to move. It's covered in snow leopard and has plastic corner protectors and recessed handels. It blows a 147 Db on the breathalizer using a HiFonics Boltar (350 RMS x 2 @ 2 ohms stereo) but is driving the amp to a 1.5 ohms load and requires external fans. I used PC fans from junked desktops I scavaged since they are 12 volt. Radio Shack has some but are too low CFM for such heat. Not to mention my amp is getting 18 volts power supply.
I've been working on a less gaudy, more custom looking box that will hold 9 JL Audio 10w0's with 1 cu ft of air, sealed, with indv. chambers. It has 5 acroos the bottom with the magnets out, and 4 acrosss the top with the magnets in. I don't have pics but I can fax any one who wants the blue prints to put 9 10's in a Blazer. The enclosure was custom cumputer designed using that "Bass Box 3.0" software by my hommie. It will fit but I've yet to build it so I don't know how it will sound.

The Kenwood Typhoon resides about 30 min from me at the Kenwood Factory Store in Lewisville.

The middle Typhoon is Adam Saruwatari's. He still has it as far as I know - it's one of the cleanest around. A&L Racing does awesome work.

Sweet install on the sy.

The sound bug is biting me again!

Tyler,

I hear ya. I swore off stereos when I bought my Ty. I had them all throughout highschool and college and now that I have the money I am finding other areas to spend it. But since my Ty got stolen and the stereo didn't make it back - there really is no sense in just doing a simple replacement  I have been toying with the idea and had a mental plan of what I wanted to do - it is just sitting down with my Sears Catalog and ordering the tools  I love to do my own installs that way I know exactly what to look for. I know where the shortcuts were taken. But, then it is MY Ty and I want to to look great and I don't know if I have the ability to make it as good as I want. I want it to look as stock as possible as far as the sub/amp mounting is concerned. I want to have it protected so if I do have to throw something in the back - groceries/golf clubs/2 dollar whore/ dead bodies - I don't have to worry about poking a sub. Maybe I just need to bite the bullet - maybe borrow a couple saws - and get busy. I have a guy who has done a lot of box building for me in the past. I give him the dimension and he does it all. He is normally just a cabinet guy - but who else is gonna have the cool stuff I need. Keep the pics rolling in - it is giving me GREAT ideas.

Thanks.

Thanks for the compliments. I've been installing and competing in IASCA since the beginning. I retired from competition back in 95 but am still very involved in car stereo. I don't do it for a living (There is no money in it). The boxes are made MDF and fiberglass. On the four doors Blazers they have a jack on the driver side. I copied the shape of that panel and removed the jack. On the other side I just did a reverse mold and made them exactly the same. The hardest part of the boxes was wrapping them in vinyl. At first I made the boxes one big piece and try wrapping that but I couldn't get the vinyl to scretch that much. So I decided to cut the panel in half and wrap them in two pieces. Three if you count the speaker pods. I do have pop of grilles for those speakers. Just not in the picture. The amp in the windows are visable on the outside of the truck through the glass. I removed the back of the amp so you can see the inside of the amp from the outside of the truck. Neon is also in there. From what you can tell I am not to concern about thief because I never really drive this truck and would never park it anywhere bad. I could go on and on about the system but am working on a web site about it and should be up soon. I am still in Vegas but will be back home by Saturday. CES blows this year. *lol*
