some bov advice

Alright, I've gotten my engine together, and I'm doing some of the final work to it, and I got to thinkin about some stuff...

I'm planing on racing this autocross, and I know that because I have an automatic trans I shouldn't need to worry about a bov, but the idea still crosses my mind...at least the idea of ditching my stock pipe that runs from my turbo to my intercooler...can I just have mufflerman like, bend me a piece of stainless for that? and if I do go with a bow, whats a good valve for running around 18psi with?

Also I was planning on buying a T3 blanket for my turbo, should I also perhaps wrap my crossover pipe, and downpipe?

I would do the Mufflerman pipe...it would be real cheap. Hit it with some nice paint and it should look good.

Some people will caution you to NOT wrap your pipes because it traps moisture and could be a fire hazard if soaked in fuel or oil (all of which are true, but I did it to mine). I also run a T3 blanket on my turbo.

Re: some bov advice

Re the BOV, why does having an automatic mean you don't need to worry about it? Just curious.

I just bought a HKS SSQV for mine. Anything over 15 psi and the air going back through the blades is going to cause fatigue. I'm surprised they didn't come stock.

I have a turbo blanket but as qbnkiller says, you run the moisture/fluids risk with the wrap etc. I didn't see the benefits. I would rather get them ceramic coated one day.

That's what I ran on my truck back when I was stock turbo:

If you decide to go the HKS route, you will need to get a HKS 50MM steel flange welded to your hardpipe. For a cleaner look without the "ribs" you may get going through an exhaust shop, buy a short "J" bend with an O.D. of 2 inches. The Bob Galla pipe that I had on mine had 1 1/2" rigid couplers (what I was supplied with it when I bought it) that you can buy from Lowes or Home Depot to secure it to the turbo and IC. Just be sure to give yourself enough room to slip the rubber couplers on and off next to your flange that will hold the BOV on.

also, would something Like this be the correct pipe to start with, I have a feeling it won't end up being a perfect 80, prolly a little more open, close to 100 or 105 perhaps, then I dont know, maybe weld an inch or so on after the bend to give me something to clamp to?

You want to browse in the plumbing section.

You don't need a "U" bend unless you plan to make two hardpipes... The bottom of the pipe that attached on the turbo side wasn't straight at all on mine. Here's a slightly better pic of it off the truck:

The rigid coupler will give plenty of support for any mismatch between the hardpipe and turbo. I never had mine blow off even at 20 psi.

The "trick" to getting this pipe on is to slip the turbo side on first and then the intercooler side. The intercooler side is the side that you will need to have room to slip the coupler up on to install the pipe. I used Windex to help slide the rubber "boot" on the rigid coupler towards the flange that held the BOV on. Once I got the hardpipe in line with the intercooler snout, I slid it back until the rib in the center of the boot was in between the intercooler and hardpipe. Then I slid the clamps back and tightened everything down.

Mike...You are one sick man, with an engine that looks like that!

Thanks, I did it all myself :). I have well over 100 hours of my time in it. Yes, I am OCD and I had to see a shrink about it when I was younger...

Re: some bov advice

Well, I went a local shop and talked to them and they acted like they didn't know what mandrel bent meant, so I left and looked at summit, found a J bend that was a full 180 16 gauge, 2 inch o.d., with a 3 1/2 radius, which I thought seemed right, for 12 bucks, I don't mind cutting it. I hope to have it on by this weekend, I'll post some pics up when I do

Re: some bov advice

Well, I got a piece of pipe from summit and some ridged couples from home depot and it seems to be working great. I managed to get the pipe on a bit differently, I put on couple on the intercooler side of the pipe and the other on the turbo itself, I slid the pipe with coupler onto the intercooler and then down onto the turbo that already had a coupler on it, seemed like an easy fit, pipe was fit tight to both as well, no gap really for the couple to have to take up. right now its not painted, and I haven't gotten my bov yet, but its supposed to be here monday. I just wanted to make sure this worked first. I'll prolly paint it flat black like everything else, and when im done trim the excess off the clamps. although I gotta say it doesn't look half bad natural...

I have to say I was surprised the couplers worked from home depot, I was about 50% sure I was being razzed, but I was mistaken.

Re: some bov advice

Re: some bov advice

HKS makes a 6 inch piece of pipe with the flange for the SSQV in the middle. I used a soft 90 and a straight connector and was done. Soft 90 from the turbo and then the flange pipe and then the soft coupler to the IC. I don't think I have any pics of it on the truck but if you are interested, I can dig it our and snap one of it on the bench.

Re: some bov advice

the one that hks makes doesn't sound like a bad route, Ill have to look into the T connectors, but basically is what I did was buy a piece of exhaust from summit

((http://www.summitracing.com/parts/WLK-42310/) I think thats that I got)

and cut it to fit, then went and got the fittings in the plumbing section of home dept, easy to find, and got a flange from hks that was just for a 2 inch pipe and wielded it all together. ended up looking like this;

When under WOT, the intake path never shuts. Where in a manual, unless you have a newer car with WOT shifting, every gear change is going to restrict/block the air comming in when you let off the throttle.

So an auto still could use one, but its not as nessasary as a manual. Some stock turbo's have 100K miles plus and still work great w/o ever having a BOV. And i bet some manual cars have 100K miles on stock trubo's with out BOV's.

Re: some bov advice

U had to get a smaller flange then the one i sent u with the bov?

No, I didnt mean to word it that way, the one you supplied me with in the 'kit' worked perfectly with the 2 inch pipe. I'm thinking of perhaps getting the purple insert...but I've never heard one.

Lol oh ok.. I was gona say if that one didnt work u can send it back... Ive never heard any of the other inserts either.. Always just used the ones that came in the bov.. I can check into em though if u want.. Might be able to find sound clips on youtube of the different ones..
