man I remember the day i got my lisence in the mail, filled up my dads truck with gas going to wash it. pulled out of the gas station on wet pavement and the truck magically went sideways for about 25 to 90 feet. i got it back under control and drove the two or so blocks to car wash. cop followed me into a bay and wrote me a ticket......damn that sucked, first day with a dl and got a ticket.i didnt want to go out anymore. went home and told on myself. My dad, I wish I was half the man he was, put the ticket in his wallet and told me to be careful and go have a good night with my freedom. later we went to the court and he knew the judge, got it lowered to failure to maintain vehicle control and the fine was MUCH less. still its a shitty feeling and the cop was just doing his job. I just felt dumb for getting caught.....

In Utah the way the law works is, I'm serious here, If your next to some one doing the speed limit with the cruise control on and the other person speeds up or takes off ect. you were both racing.

If you end up needing to sell the truck to pay for fines, can't afford insurance, ect I'll probably buy it.

Displaying or showing an exhibition of excessive speed no matter the speed limit constitutes as racing here in FL can fall under statute 319.192 of street racing.

(2)(a) A person may not:
1. Drive any motor vehicle, including any motorcycle, in any race, speed competition or contest, drag race or acceleration contest, test of physical endurance, or exhibition of speed or acceleration or for the purpose of making a speed record on any highway, roadway, or parking lot;

You also dont have to have another vehicle present and can be all by yourself to be convicted of "racing" and have statute 319.191 wreckless driving pinned on you as well.

(1)(a) Any person who drives any vehicle in willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property is guilty of reckless driving.

Why is that nuts? Your vehicle at that point is deemed a weapon and the act of racing can be looked at as a felony. They dont always keep your vehicle, but its not uncommon either and usually vehicles will go into police auction. Ive been to an auction where a GN was up for sale due to the driver wouldnt stop with cocaine in the car and right next to the GN was a Syclone that again... driver refused to stop and racked up a few felonies.

Same basic rules apply here in FL too. Get caught, your vehicle goes to the impound and you go into custody and get to think about all the fines and court dates your are about to receive....which is typically a $1000 fine and losing your license for 1 year in FL along with paying all the expenses of having your vehicle impounded.

There is a simple solution. If you fear the consequences of getting caught, dont do it. If you get caught and knew the possibly of what would happen, dont cry about it.

if you run it up to 45mph and the speed limit is 45mph what crime has been comitted, failure for my car picking up an absurd amount of speed in a little amount of time? what about cars that actually go fast and are sold to the public?

FWIW now if you are all over the place going sideways this wouldnt matter as it would be IMPROPER START IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA.

but with an AWD vehicle why would you be all over the place now if all they did was catch you running up to 45mph then you have not commited any crime.

trust me over 200 tickets on my record 00000000000000000000000000000000000 points. shit i remember when reckless driving was still a misdemeanor in the state of FL.

"Improper start" falls under reckless driving.

The law/statute doesnt care if you are RWD, FWD or AWD. You dont have to be all sideways or smoking the tires. If you display excessive speed (i.e FAST ACCELERATION) on public road you can legally be tagged with streetracing and reckless under 316.192 and 191.

I also might add, here in FL, you can also be fined for being a passenger or simply WATCHING streetracing as a spectator, again falls under 316.192

Sounds to me like entrapment, that GTP was probably a cop. I didn't think a vehicle could be impounded until you went to court and was found guilty. You are not guilty yet. Also, judges don't always like all cops.

I will be getting my ty back. They dont keep it unless you are a habitual offender. This is my first offence. I know who was in the GTP. He's not a cop. Maybe I can at least get it reduced or a plea. Ive learned my lesson.

Not Good Advice :
Go to court and tell the judge that yes you were trying to distance yourself from the scary individual looking at you sideways , while sitting at the light . Then yes you gunned it , but not in the exhibition manner assumed by officer . If the other car drove away , whos to say otherwise ?

Lots of fees/fines. I have to pay a $330 admin. fee to DMV to get an impound release. Then I have to pay the $145 for the tow, plus a $30 admin fee to the tow company and $75 in storage.

The cop wasn't an asshole man. He saw you doing what you did. Bottom line. Back in 05, I raced these two Mustangs from the light, when I launched, I put a few cars on these guys and got pulled over. The cop charged me with careless driving and on the back of the ticket he wrote he wanted to charge me with speed contest but said I took off so fast he couldn't tell if the other two cars were racing:rotf:

But still , I knew what I did and even though I never went over 40 I didn't piss when I got the ticket.

You cant complain until you get your truck impounded for exhaust:lol:

I dont let my kids play in the streets either. but i have been known to go for walks, walk the dog, and walk around at the malls, flea markets, car shows etc. I really do not want to be run down or see my kids or anyone for that matter just because some yahoo wants to race someone on a public road. sure i have a heavy foot. but in town around people and intersections I drive like an old man with no where to go. I dont want a ticket, I dont want my car impounded, I dont want to run the risk of hurting myself or anyone else. argue all you want about being able to control a vehicle and skill and know how and what ever. at 100 plus mph and someone pulls out infront of you that does not mean shit. the safest way to enjoy our hobby is on the track. period. done

I can't believe the response here. Even if you've never raced on the street and disagree with anyone else doing it, you guys could show some compassion.

Possibility of impound is a reason people run.

Explain compassion to someone that has to have a loved one extricated from a mangled wreck that used to be a car that was broadsided by someone involved in street-racing. That factor alone is enough to keep me from answering a challenge from some of the idiots around here that wanna run my Ty. I know it's fast enough for me and that's good enough for me. If I ever get the urge, I'll take it to a track where I can LEGALLY do it. I don't want dead bodies on my conscience because I was acting a fool with my head up my 4th point of contact because I wanted to look bad-ass smoking someone on the streets. If I hurt your feelings with that response, then go put your big-boy Underoos on and call someone that cares. :2cents:
