Well...my friend bought a slim jim because he always locks his keys in his car. The problem is, he, nor I, really know how to use it. Have any of yall used one before and can you give us some tips?

Re: Slim Jim

Never used one, but a hammer usually works good for me. On the blazer and the ty I just use another GM key.

Re: Slim Jim

I thought Slim Jims only worked with manual locks? I guess its just like using a coat hanger, you just want to get at the rod that is attached to the lock and pull it back. Make sense?

Re: Slim Jim

I ditn't know you could buy them over the counter, at least not here in California. I had to make my own. Every make and model car is a bit different somtiems you have to pull and other times you have to push, and the locking rod is in different places for different vehicles. After you seen them used a couple times you get the idea of how to do it. But really hard to explain in words, I think it's just something you gotta see in action.

Re: Slim Jim

I have a J shaped rod witha hook on the end that slide 's down the widow like a slim jim but then goes under the window comes out on the inside of the car and is just long enough to trip the power window switch... pretty handy back in the day....

Keeping a $2.00 copy of your door key in your wallet is a bit cheaper, it's never let me down.....

Or you could be like my Grandpa and have about 10 sets of keys wired up to the bottom of your car somewhere. Ive always thought about tapping in to the auto door lock and putting another switch elsewhere.

Re: Slim Jim

In most states it is illegal to carry or use a slim jim unless you are a professional locksmith. You can be charged with possession of a burglary tool and this is usually a felony. Put a spare set of keys in one of those magnetic boxes hidden under the truck. I have had a set there for 7 years and they have never fallen off.

Re: Slim Jim

they also tend to ruin the door locks.

Making it so you can't use the key to unlock that door anymore, that happend to me years ago.
when I took it to get repaired they said it was caused by someone using a slim jim on the door. I also heard a cop here in San Antonio say they stopped using them to open locks on cars because of that damage.
