What ever it takes!!
Re: shaking symptons

Up until recently I would've never agreed with this as I've literally changed/resurfaced at least 1,000 rotors and have personally never seen one that I would've felt had enough rust build up on it to warrant saying that it would cause a shake, that and the vehicle didn't shake before I started working on it and I've pulled off some pretty horrendous ones.

Then the other day I was helping a friend out with their 1994 Oldsmobile Silhouette (beauty of a vehicle :) ) they were complaining of a high speed vibration and needed their brakes done. As I have recommended a 100 times before I said I'll change the brakes and then for them to go get the tires balanced. Once I pulled it apart I've never seen a pair of more disfigured rotors (in this way), it was like they were flaking apart worse than a day old croissant you were trying to pick apart. Down inside the veins of the rotor there was rusted layer upon layer of lifted and separated metal to the point where there almost weren't even veins anymore and it was a solid rotor.

How this was able to come to be on a vehicle that's spent at least the last 10 years of it's life, if not all, in CA is beyond me but it was undoubtedly the second worst rotor I've ever seen.

Point of this story is that immediately after they left, they called me and said that the vibration was gone. As hard as that was for me to believe they didn't have any reason to lie nor did they have anyway of knowing that I would have been skeptical of this prior to me taking the vehicle apart. I still haven't ever told them about this and I continue to slyly ask from time to time about the van and if it shakes.

To this day, no more shakes and the tires were never balanced.
Do I believe that rotors can cause a vibration now, yes.
Do I believe that the rotors could cause a vibration if there wasn't something blatantly obvious wrong with them, no.
Odds of rotors being the cause of your vibration at least 1000:1 :myclone:

I guess I can swap the rotors from the sy and give it a shot. I'm pretty desperate at this point since the ty is the DD now.

Code what?
Checking out of round on the rotors with a dial indicator could rule out that possibility. Although I don't recall any specification for that measurement. It would be obvious if you had a rather large discrepancy between rotors. My Typhoon has a slight shimmy in the wheel about the same speed. Not as violent as yours but I know mine in the right front wheel as it has a very small flat spot on the inside edge

Personally if my options left were between a diff rebuild and a rotor swap, I'd probably try the rotor swap first being as you can do that in less than an hour, if your fast :)

My spidey sense tells me it's not the rotors, so don't get your hopes up.

I do see a thickness difference on the inside of the rottors. Now the POS russell brake line started to leak.

Re: shaking symptons

Rotors from the sy did not fix the problem...going to crank up the springs another 1/4".

Must be a northern thing, had lots of bad rotors on cars and trucks and felt an improvement after a full brake job on alot of them, even had friends say the same thing. Even felt improvements after a set of drums were replaced once or twice.

But you know better than that if you've ever had a rotor on the lathe. Anything that rotates on a vehicle can cause a vibration. And surely you've seen just how out of balance a rotor can be on a lathe.....even while appearing fine to the naked eye.

When we ran our parts store (for 12+ years), I cut 8-10 rotors a day, 4 days a week (we had the local police contract as well as a Fort Stewart light duty contract). Of the tens of thousands of rotors I cut, I saw hundreds if not thousands of them that appeared okay but would wobble violently on the lathe. .020" later, they were fit to be installed in a Rolex. It's amazing just how big a vibration can be caused by the smallest variance.

Side note....I wonder if the rusty rotor you had was one of the GM chromium-deleted ones that suffered from rust issues. I'm not sure what all was fitted with those rotors, but I do know they had problems irregardless of location/salt/etc....

Oh yeah, I totally know what you mean the ones that on the first pass only hit one half of the hemisphere of the rotor :rotf:

Yes, it is crazy how big of a problem a small thing can cause, but also how many of those rotors that are completely screwed and the car drove absolutely perfectly, crazy world we live in.

The only thing behind that I could ever theorize as to why, is that as you've probably also have seen most of the time they're warped exactly opposite of each other, so they're still essentially balanced, theoretically.

Re: shaking symptons

I recently added a 2nd spacer to the front coil over shocks from RPM. This allowed me to tighten the spring alot more. It seems to drive alot better then before. Im gunna order a set of 650-700lbs. spring so that I can remove the spacers and level the ty out. I also noticed that the shock eye hole bushing were getting destroyed and since have gone to solids mounts.
