Saudi Syclone - 2612

This was on UK eBay and "sold" for £3k. *The winning bidder walked away from the sale as the did the next two. *The guy seemed desperate to sell for £2500 so I offered £2350 and after some initial frustration, he accepted my offer.

A £299 shipping bill and 360 mile ride on a trailer and it resides in my Dad's warehouse.

It has a blown engine - the rod left the block and it looks like it's been sitting outside for a while. *He says that that trans was rebuilt not long ago and it has a new SS exhaust. It has 49k miles but it looks like a bit of TLC wouldn't go amiss.

I've not seen the truck but the plan is to rebuild the engine as economically as possible. It depends on the damage.

 I am with Nate on this, WTF????????????????????

:D

My g/f is LIVID that I bought the truck! I had to wait all week. I nearly asked some Russian escorts for pics but their mafia boyfriends looked a bit too unaccommodating so I avoided that issue.

My Dad took these pics - I was having too much holiday fun to take many fanny snaps!

She doesn't look to livid in the ONE picture that you took!

NO GREEN CARD FOR YOU!

Ban Hammer!

Only way you can make up for this is to now post NINE pictures of hotties with the Fanny Pack within 24 hours.

In Fenway Park on top of the Green Monster.

And they must be at least topless.

Looks like there is some work to be done! MDH and I are going to tear down the engine this weekend. Updates to follow.

There probably won't be any girls in this thread :D

I haven't seen this on a truck before - steering dampener?

Time to get the engine off the back of the truck. The suspension did NOT like all that weight back there.

My Dad, the person who I can most acutely attribute my SyTy disease to. He really enjoyed helping out. He bought my Ty from the dealer in Saudi Arabia in 1993 and that's when it all started.

Success! At this point, it was time to start looking at the reason for the truck's long down time.

We spent a couple of hours tearing the engine down to get the heads off and take a look inside..

Driver side reveal...

IMG_0106.jpg

Nothing of note... apart from the ding in the exhaust valve where the piston hit it.. :(

Passenger side..

IMG_0107.jpg

This is bad - number 6 is a lot more damp..

IMG_0108.jpg

Can anyone spot what's wrong with this picture?

I should add that the exhaust push rod on #6 was bent and also one on #5.

That would explain why fragments of the lifter are stuck under the exhaust valve.

With the heads off, we turned the engine to get the pan off. I'd seen this before but in the light and turned to it was easy to view, it conveyed a bit more of an idea about what had happened to the truck.

Through the crank...

That's not normal..

Cyclinder blown through. I thought the little 4.3 in the corner was a nice touch.

Close up of the damaged (destroyed/obliterated) rod..

Summary
We started the tear down at 9pm. I had class in the morning and then a 3 hour train to meet Marcus and then a 3 hour drive to get to the unit. We pulled the engine apart from 9pm until 0130 and then tidied up and called it a night.

Happy Face - working on a truck!

IMG_0129.jpg

Sad Face - broken parts and lots of expenditure necessary.

Diagnosis
I think that the engine hydrolocked somehow. Whether the cylinder wall went or a gasket did, I'm not sure. The block is destroyed and I can salvage 4 of the pistons, possibly 5 (TRW 4.030"). The rods are stock I believe and didn't shatter contrary to people's expectation. I'm pretty sure the crank is toast, and the cam in mangled.

The rest of the truck is in pretty good shape. The seller thought it was worth more but I think we can agree that he was wrong. There are however some features that are interesting to see and the interior is immaculate. I imagine that having been in the UK since 1993, it has never seen hot weather :rotf: and thus the dash, the cladding and the lumbar supports etc all work and are in good condition.

Superficial frame rust can be POR 15'd and a bit of TLC will see the truck restored. The paint needs going over and the rust over the passenger side arches, front and rear, needs attention. The truck is indoors now away from the elements but it has been neglected for many months if not years by the looks of the cobwebs on the engine and leaves and other detritus that adorn the hood.

I suspected that the engine was beyond repair based on the seller's description so overall I am happy. I now need to work out what to do with the engine choice. At this point I have no idea whether to keep it V6 or go V8 given the success I have seen from the guys on here.

There's no rush.
