Re: Saudi Syclone - 2612

Thanks for the kind words guys. I haven't updated in a while because I haven't done much but my Dad has been helping me with a few minor things that are pretty major.

First off, the truck moved home. My Dad was getting hammered with rates for the current unit so he downsized and now rents in a smaller one. It's still a monumental waste of money given the value of the stuff in there but whatever... The implication for me is that there is a lot less space to work on the truck now. Hopefully that will prove a moot point as I qualify in about 5 months and will be moving home and may even have a garage of my own!

The old place...

The new unit looks very similar but is just a lot smaller. I think it's down to 800 sqft from an earlier 1500.

My Dad also adjusted the torsion bars and the truck sits a lot more level though it needs to have the camber done and probably the torsion rods adjusted again.

One of the big changes is the starter motor. Bullydawg helped me get a starter from the US which fits the motor. I tried the ghetto approach and grinding/drilling a stock SyTy starter but it wasn't right. A new starter was cheap so I went for it. Apparently it is much better sounding and I am not concerned about it hitting the flexplate like it did before. I am very pleased with the result.

This then led on to a no-start condition. When I got it running the last time, it was very hard to start and only came to life when my Dad and I cleaned all the plugs. It seemed fine and then stopped running again. I've seen a few similar threads and have wondered what it could be.

Seeing as cleaning the plugs worked last time, my Dad removed them all again to take a look...

I have a few ideas as to why they are so fouled but am open to other suggestions.

The main ones are that the injectors were from two different vehicles; a Syclone with a blown engine and a few years of laying around and a 1999 Chevy Blazer engine. I checked the injectors were the same part number but after all the time between the truck running, they are probably not in the best of shape. My Dad has decided to help me out with some new 60# injectors from TurboTweak for my birthday - pretty awesome of him.

I will put in some new plugs as well.
The wires are all new.
The Code59 is set to a 3 Bar MAP at present so I need to change it to a 2 bar.
I have compression and spark and the timing is good so I hope that those minor changes will fix it and it will run a bit better.
It probably needs a new fuel filter.
I have a new Walbro waiting to go in if it comes to it.

I normally work on my trucks around this time of year but with my final medical exams and all the other stuff going on, (wedding :D), it looks like the trucks get to hibernate a bit longer.

I cannot wait to have a job and a place to work on them next year.

Hope you guys are all making your own progress out there!

Re: Saudi Syclone - 2612

Thanks Brandon! Not long now...

I did have some time to play with it this weekend. It wouldn't start so we thought we'd try a few things. 60s helped and I changed the fuel pump. It now runs and starts but after a couple of minutes, dies at idle. What do you guys think is going on?

Re: Saudi Syclone - 2612

Oh, another question...

Does anyone have a diagram or info on which bolts have which brackets to hold the IC in place please?

Re: Saudi Syclone - 2612

Thanks Randy, yes, I think so. I also got this from GNNorthwest via TNPhoon (thanks!).

And here is one I forgot I took.

There are 3 brackets: the straight one, the L bracket for the lower intake and there is another one which looks bent.

The straight goes on the left hand bolt of exhaust from #2.

The L bracket goes on the lower intake manifold bolt numbered 4.

The bent bracket goes on the left hand side of #6 .

You do have a Saudi Sy.
Saw a sale advert for the only Saudi Sy in GB. Need to call BS on him.
Nice job as always, Mark.

Re: Saudi Syclone - 2612

To celebrate the arrival of 2016, I sold the truck. It was a fun project and I saved her but it's time to pass the baton to the new owner who can finish up the final pieces and the tweaks needed to make her a great vehicle.

Sad to let her go. Lots of work in there.

Happy New Year!

Great story.
Curious, when taking out your torsion bars, how difficult was it? I am in the middle of rebuilding my front suspension, have new a arms coated, have to take off the old ones.
Thanks

Re: Saudi Syclone - 2612

Thanks. It wasn't too bad. Have the truck in the air, no weight on the wheels. Then I adjusted the torsion keys so they were as loose as possible. Obviously the lower ball joint needs to be separate from the spindle. Next I just loosened the bolts on the lower arm so it came out the hinges. There was a tiny amount of residual torsion but as long as the bolts in the pork chops are out, they should be loose.

The arm will hang down at this point and I just took a BFH to knock the A arm off the end. To install, reverse. Not too bad really!

Thanks for getting back. SO nothing swinging out and hitting you? I know our torsion bars are a little different than the big trucks!

Re: Saudi Syclone - 2612

You're welcome, glad to help. No, no excess tension that I recall.. As long as it's loosened at the keys, that's the only way I can see it being done.

Re: Saudi Syclone - 2612

So I took payment a week ago and today the truck was taken off my hands. I was very sorry to let it go as I had some good times saving it and learned a lot and am quite proud of what I managed to accomplish under the circumstances. It needs a lot more work but hopefully nothing major. I hope the new owner will update this thread when he gets it. I will try and help him with it as well seeing as he isn't too far from me.

I drove it last night and it was hilarious. No prop shaft, slightly wet ground and a lot of tyre spin. That was without the turbo hooked up. I think this truck will be very nice when it's all buttoned up properly!

Drove it out and loaded up the few spares I had.
