Replaced Alternator, blew-up radio in the process

I hate it when I fix one thing and break another. Stupid me forgot to unhook the battery while removing my old alternator (was starting to emit very evil noises). I did remember to unhook the battery before I put the new one on.

I go to test everything and my radio comes on, but I only get a popping sound when I adjust the volume. It does this for both the radio and CD player. Anyone know much about Delco radios and what I might have cooked in it?

consider yourself lucky on that one, you lost a radio, my dad shocked the crap outa his arm, rested his watch band on the power lead to the alternator, NASTY!NASTY NASTY burn.

Who reads instructions? People with radios that work and arms that aren't burnt I guess.

Check the power fuse for the Radio's memory/clock. I have seen the delco's put out static when this fuse blows and not the main radio fuse. Might as well check all of the fuses while your down there.... Steve.

Well, I ripped out my stock radio and hooked up another Delco I have (doesn't fit, has to be upside down to get wires connected) and it worked perfectly. So, it is definately something inside the radio.

Well, at least something works when installed upside down....If you want to keep the bad radio, then send it to your favorite radio/tv repair shop or... check with some auto sound shops, they usually have an abundance of factory radios on the shelf for about what it would cost to get yours repaired...am/fm cass/factory units run about $50 while the cd's can go to $100 or higher... Good luck...

This is from an earlier post/email, awhile ago (still have the deck btw)
Well I called the dealer to get an idea...

New: $700-$800 (WTF)
ReBuilt: $400-$450 (has to be ordered from some place in NY)

So I'll go $150+shipping, I'll email pics of it tomorrow.
