rebuilding hydroboost unit?

Anybody rebuild a hydroboost unit? What's involed in doing so? I'm chasing a brake issue with my newly installed hydroboost brake setup (whole different thread) and I'm thinking its a problem with the HB unit itself at this point. Its $30 for a rebuild kit vs $200 for a "new" unit. I would much rather rebuild mine over spending 200 to replace it and find out that's not my issue. Any HB brake guys rebuild one?

Re: rebuilding hydroboost unit?

I was looking to do do this but it was $80 for the kit I found and a reman one from Autozone was $130 or something, not $200. Seemed pretty easy. Good luck and post pics!

Re: rebuilding hydroboost unit?

I just got off the phone with autozone and they have a reman unit for a 93 astro van for $121 and the core charge is $75.

I found rebuild kits on eBay for $30 shipped. I will try that first, can't be too hard to do. I'll try to post some pics if I go this route.

Ive had one apart, pretty simple but I would play it safe and just buy a new one.

I close on my new house in 12 days so pretty much my entire life savings will gone. I need to refrain from taking the easy more expsensive way out for a while

Unfortunately cheap often ends up leading to a more expensive route!

I'm keen to see how this option works though.

$30 for a rebuild kit and do it myself or $120 for a reman unit with a $30 rebuild kit that somebody else put together :dunno:

Seems like a no brainer to me... A reman unit would be easier though. We'll see how difficult it is to replace a couple o-rings and seals.

The only thing I think you might have problems with is the shaft. If I remember right, and I could be wrong, it seemed to me the shaft needed to come off to replace that seal. Now thinking back, I don't remember finding a way to get the shaft off.

I don't know the first thing about taking apart one of these units . That's why I'm looking for some insight. I just dont want to buy another one and find out that wasn't my problem. However that is the only part of the brake system I didn't get and install myself and isn't new. The HB unit came with the truck

Re: rebuilding hydroboost unit?

What kit are you looking at and what instructions are you using?

I tried to remove the brake pedal and it snapped the fitting inside the unit - that part is tricky, if it's even possible. I started some HB threads when I was looking at my problems - might be in there.

Take lots of pics! Good luck man!

Is there a way to change the pedal length? I cracked the one I tried to remove.

Re: rebuilding hydroboost unit?

Well I got the pump apart and there isn't much to replace other than some springs and o-rings. Everything looked good inside and nothing obviously wrong to casuse my issues. Anyways, Mike was right, its's impossible to remove the pedal rod in order to rplace the 2 seals. Like an ass I tried anyway and I broke it  so now my new HB unit that I have to buy just cost me $30 more for a rebuild kit that I didn't need. FAIL

Re: rebuilding hydroboost unit?

turbobuick guys say they can hold 10psi on the hydroboost systems, at 2000 + operating psi i hope so this is the next mod i am doing to my buick.

A lot of that will depend on converter stall. I could hold 10 psi with my stock brakes and 3k stall converter. It was just a pain in the ass to build up the vacuum first to the booster to get the brakes to hold.

Did you read this: my thread

Sorry man...

They implied that if you were gently it would come out but as it's stamped in there I reckon you'd need to get a fine tip torch on it and make the metal soft enough that it doesn't crack.

Re: rebuilding hydroboost unit?

Well I got a new hydroboost unit from advance auto for $155. I used 94 Chevy astro van as a reference so hopefully it's the correct one. I'm going to put it in tomorrow and cross my fingers it cures my brake problem. I'm moving on Monday and I dont want to have to tow the Typhoon.
