Rebuild prices

I just got 3 different quotes on a carry out rebuild w/ tcc from 3 reliable shops around my area. $995, $800, and $725. Do these sound right or is it too good to be true?

Re: Rebuild prices

you think you will save money now but, when you have to pull it back out put it back in etc, because it dosent shift right the list goes on ,it is worth the more money to have them do it,and they will stand behind it im sure

Re: Rebuild prices

to get one built pretty decent and R&R yourself it is going to be around $2000- $3000 depending if you get a converter or not.

Re: Rebuild prices

you dont need a $2000 transmission. just find someone who knows what theyre doing and you trust.

I got a guy in NJ that has done mine! Ran last two years on same tranny running low 11's.

Aamco "Point Pleasant,NJ" Off course 1 year warranty on top of that. nationwide.

cost is $2,000 with them pulling it. so maybe around 1500-1600 as a carry out service.

Re: Rebuild prices

those prices are way too low. you cant buy half the parts yo need for that much less afford to pay somebody the time needed to build one.

Ask them if they've built (specifically) a Sy/Ty trans before. If they say no, or "no, but it's just a 700r4" walk away.

You can barely buy the necessary parts for the $725. Which would leave them $0 for their time? Not likely.

More likely, they're selling you a gasket/seal kit, and some new frictions.... which won't last long.

If your intent is to do it right, look up one of the builders here, or at least someone in your region that has done a SyTy trans before.

If your intent is to slap it together and sell it, and make it the next guy's problem, might as well do it local. Can't say that's the way I'd go...

Re: Rebuild prices

I work at a GMC dealership and had my transmission specialist rebuilt my 700 when it went. We spend $700-800 just on parts and he did the labor for almost nothing for me. I dont think a $725-995 would be right if they were doing it correctly.

Re: Rebuild prices

Figure $500 of those price is for the time to rebuild (assuming they are actually doing everything)

Re: Rebuild prices

I had a local guy do mine that builds performance trannies. I trusted his work just because I know guys that used him in their drag cars and had no problems. I got the parts at cost and a discount on labor and it was still $1296 not including the torque converter. I sold it to a member on here so maybe he'll have more info on how its holding up now. It lasted 1000 miles for me till my engine went.

Re: Rebuild prices

I'm not really looking to build it up to say, I just want to be able to drive it again and make up my mind if I am keeping it or not. I have owned it for 10 yrs and haven't really done anything with it. It has 143k on it and I am the 3rd owner. Right now, It won't move until it has warmed up. It I try to move it cold, it just revs and it feels like riding a clutch. There is no burning smell, but has a leak coming from the front. If I can avoid a rebuild to get back on the road I'd like to. It has been garaged for 4 years now. It used to be my daily driver until this happened one day when my wife was driving it. It has a real hard time shifting when warm and it won't go into od. Can this be fixed or is a rebuild my only option? I've had it looked at by a shop, they did a fluid flush and said that I had low pump pressure but didn't seem to find anything else wrong.

here is your 1st problem.....a fluid flush only masks the problem... the trans FILTER needs to be changed when you change the fluid.
these "jiffy lube", and "instant oil change" places only flush the tranny fluid, and dont change the filter.

2nd thing is is it full of fluid???

Any "REAL TRANNY SHOP" will tell you they will need to remove the transmission disassemble and find the actually problem, could be sprag, pump, bands, clutch packs, drum this has also infected your converter which will need to be flushed and serviced, Any tranny shop will charge you atleast $500 to pull out and $ to determine the problem. If this is the orginal tranny and if you have never had it serviced, it most likely needs a rebuild but by a professional who know trannies.

My 1st tranny was done by a GM Tech and it lasted about 6months unitl i started going to a local who specializes in Racing and Performance Transmission @ a Aamco Dealer.

Now mine is built to withstand 700+ HP
