Rear driver side brakes soaked with oil

I was getting a bad burn smell from the rear section of my truck. Did some investigation and i noticed the brake shoes on the drivers side rear are soaked with oil. Looks like the seal on that side went bad. Can someone help me out and direct me on what seal i would need to order and maybe some tech info on what i'm looking at to replace that seal. I'm almost sure i need to take out that side axle, but not sure. Also do i do both sides even though only one side is leaking?

Is the leak coming from the axle seal or the wheel cylinder ? Wheel cylinder repair is easy, axle seal = more work.

It looks like the axle seal. The reason i say that is because the center on the axle is more soaked then the area around the brake cylinder plus i don't ever recall adding brake fluid. The level is still at the top.

Not a fun job at all, I have to do the pinion seal on my ty. Not hard just hate the smell of diff fluid

hes doing and axle seal simple job , pop cover, pull c-clip slide axle out and swap seal, then rebuild brakes

Im almost sure once i start the job ill get it done but i just thought i ask how much time i should put aside. I also would like to order the seals first but from the search it seems that no one is sure. One post said if you have a rear end from canada its a different part number!!!! :roll: I guess i have not other chose but to start the job pull the seal and go from there.

I remember walking out to witness a fluid leak from the same rear driver wheel...turned out I twisted the actual axle (new drag radials) I jacked up the truck off the ground to watch the tire wiggle/wobble. Running moser's now with the C-clip eliminators.

If my stock truck can do that i would be amazed, and maybe in the "Big Guns" club hahah.

how long can you do rear brakes in? add 30 minutes to that time :tup:

One thing people fail to mention about "just pulling the c clips" is removing the pin that holds it all together. You have to look for a small horizontal bolt on the diff unit. It is an 8mm. Once you find you remove it and then you need to work the pin out. It can be kind of stuck in there to a degree. Once you see you figure out a way to get it out if it doesn't just fall out. You need to position the diff so that it will indeed come out though. Then, you need to push the axles inward so that the c clip will be able to come out. Its not just remove the cover and there they are. Not much more to it of course but I hate to see you struggling under your truck for an hour no understanding why the c clips arent just coming out.

Thanks guys for all the info. I was planning to start it this week one night after work but i don't know if i want to take the chance before the NASTE meet. I will check the fluid and all and maybe just plan it before i store it away for the winter.

I agree and i usually follow that rule but the passenger side is dry and clean. I might just take on the chance and do the bad side for now.

you should be able to get the seal at any autoparts store.. the rear end isn't anything special.

Do both when u have to drain the oil the secondtime u won't be happy lol

There's a good chance the pinion shaft lock bolt will break when you try to remove it. Allow extra time for that.
