how much is that kit going to run for if you dont mind me asking
So I guess my question is this, are we saying that the Sportmachines kit is a step in the wrong direction for our trucks?
We are working to make it a full bolt in affair. We have some more test ing to do but preliminary calculations, looking at $1200.
Thats for the bolt in 4 link. The hardware. Single adjustable coilovers, with springs, and ends, ready to install. IF you wanted a specific color for Powdercoating or additionals, that would add to the cost.
To add a bit more, the basics of any rear suspension is the Instant Center. Below is a very basic graph. Compare it to any design you see listed anywhere.
Ladder bars are the front pivot point.
Leaf springs are also (usually)
A lot of low rider suspensions totally disregard this, you will see the instant center behind the vehicle, which for drag racing is not a good thing. I've done it on my own typhoon on accident, it spun badly at the track, I thumped my chest thinking I was making a ton of horsepower, the track sucked, etc. It wasn't any of those it was the setup of my suspension.

Now for those wanting to race around turns/cones etc then Roll Center plays a big part, something even my own typhoon could stand to be adjusted right now. (of course it has to run first)
I am not here to throw cold water on what sounds like a hot setup, but I was going to do a 4-link a few years back and ran into a couple of issues. The concerns were mentioned by people that did chassis work for a living...rails, door-cars, pro-streets, etc.
Us sy-tyer's have a couple of problems. If we mount a 4-link out-board we hurt our tire clearance. If we run them in-board we hurt our streetability and cornering. Inboard is ok for straight-line racing and somewhat ok for a street sy, but the ty is side heavy and in-board is not good for them on the street. If we center the bars under the frame in a Ty we can't get any clearance for travel, unless there is some frame notching done. 4-link on a ty without back-halving as been done, but not so sure how well it turned out.
The other, bigger reason is the fact that our AWD doesn't need "lift" from the front. Transferring weight off of the front is what is killing our handling at the track. It's been proven that when we keep our front planted, and weighted, we are more stable out of the hole and it helps our 60 foots.
I had Dunstan Performance experiment with a bolt-on 3-link bar several years ago. It was to short in length and had about 1.5 of frame clearance. I was a disaster trying to hook up. The front was coming up and the rears were unloading way to early. Couldn't get any better than mid to high 1.6x.
The chassis shop that did my current setup worked with Competition Chassis to come up with a long three link bar that came forward to the door pillar, closer to the instant center of the truck. This dropped the rear weight of the truck on the tires with out unloading so much weight off of the front...as well as allowed the weight to hang back there longer. Have pulled some 1.4x with a 4,150lb ty.
If we want we could have a 4-link setup pull our heavy front ends off of the ground and transfer a ton of weight (literally) to the rear wheels. But then what is the point of AWD? Just more weight to haul down the track? In a perfect world we would want all four tires to have the right amount of weight to each tire patch throughout the launch. Hard to do though.
