Quick Ratio Steering Box for SY?

Has anyone ever changed there steering box for a quicker ratio unit? I've hear that the 3rd Gen F-body (80's Camaro, Trans AM)Unit might work?...Any Info on this? Is there any modification that needs to be done to use the F-Body Steering Box? or is it a direct swap? Also, I've heard that AGR makes a nice F-Body Unit for around $350...Anyone ever used it? Looking for a 12:1 ratio unit to get a more "sports car like" feel. How difficult is switching the steering box? What's involved?

I spoke to a dude a while ago at this place Power Steering Place and I forget the exact $$$ amount but it was just over $200. They actually rebuild YOUR existing box, meaning U pull it and send it. They may have an exchange program you should ask.

I've been wanting to pull mine and send it to them but haven't gotten around to it Anyhow...they WILL rebuild your stocker to a QUICK RATIO box, similar to whats in the vette if NOT faster.

92typhoon,

Hey thanks for the Info...I may look into it!! 2 week turnaround may be alittle long to wait but the price is great!!

Anyone else have info about the F-Body swap?

I put a Momo champion steering on my Sy and it helped make the turns quicker. The Momo is quite a bit smaller than the stock unit so fewer turns are required to make quick lane changes. I may do the quick-ratio box too but not before I upgrade the turbo, wastegate, intercooler, brakes, etc. etc.

If you want another upgrade to go along with a new box, check out my chromoly tie rods, they really increase steering response.

Lt250suzuk,

Just checked out your website...very cool stuff! The Front and Rear Suspension set-up was making me drool? What's the scoop on the tie rods? How do they increase steering response? Different than stock geometry? How much do you get for a set? Thanks.

Maybe we should put in an upgraded steering box while we're at it. Any news on certain parts?

My 91 4 door 4x4 Blazer turns super quick compared to my Sy. The wheelbases are almost identical, and the blazer has the same width tires as well. Maybe the steering boxes in them are a quicker ratio? Anyone confirm or deny this? I swear I going to just swap out the systems in both my trucks just to see. I can u-ee into the next lane, where as the Sy needs at least two or more lanes.

lee power steering in cali is the absolute best box modifiers int he world.
they do ALL the nascar stuff, etc
i have dealt with them many times, all with excellent results
they will do a syty box, but will need your core (usually) to do it
have fun

Mike,

Could I just order an F-body Steering Box from Lee Power Steering and send them back my SY Steering Box as a core? Or do I need to actually have my SY steering box modified by them?

Mike,

Do you have contact info for Lee Power Steering? Thanks Man

BTW, Did you find that Lock Wrench/Key for the SY Wheels yet? Haven't mounted them on my SY yet...Planning to have them refinished first.

Rob

hey rob
sadly, no i havent found it yet, but it does indeed reside somewhere - i havent forgotten, and will keep looking.
far as the box goes, i dunno if the f box will interchange, tho i rather doubt it...i do have contact info for lee at the shop, tho they're nettable - lee manufacturing is the proper name, if i am not mistaken.
i am gonna have them do mine, when i get round to it, and last i called they had no cores and needed one.
easy tho - go to a jyard and get any 4wd box - it's getting gutted anyway, so it really doesnt matter, as you'll spec to them what u want far as ratio, effort and feel, and they can accomodate.
if u have the scratch, have them replace all the bushings with bearings, for improved feel

Well thanks for the compliment on the suspension, on to the tierods, they have a lot less deflection than the stock tierods therefore it will respond quicker. Another plus is that they are also lighter.

John, no word on that certain part yet. I will call tomorrow and call you later in the afternoon. Oh yeah we call talk about the box then as well.

I just went to the Power Steering Place website. They will rebuild your box to the quicker box for $220. It says they go to 12:1 Ratio and it is a constant ratio. Isn't ours variable ratio ? What is our stock ratio ?

Ty have fixed 17.5:1 ratio and Sy have a variable 16/13:1 ratio.
