Powerglide to transfer case

I just received my powerglide empty case yesterday from bte. Done some test fitting and decided this is the route I will be going! Spacer tfc adapter will be from jw which i will have to lengthen to aprox 8 inches. Im going by sopport bar mounting length to get spacer length. Should be able to use stock crossmember being total length will be the same as stock. Only other mod will be shortening output shaft aprox 2 inches. This will still leave plenty enough spline length. I will most likely b using a BTE (1.98 )glide with aftermarket case.

Curious your thoughts on going this route over a 4L80E, especially at a $3,500 price tag?

Now that im done buiding my Bowtie motor im almost ready to start assembly. I intended to use the 4l80 but A powerglide built to hande 2500 hp im sure would hold up nicely. Ill be following you progress.

I'm looking for efficiency with the most possible power to the wheels. I'm not concerned about mileage or the overdrive. My goal is to go into the 8s with my new build. Looking to get the truck as lite as possible to help achieve my goals.

Re: Powerglide to transfer case

You can do it !!!!

I sure hope so! I've got alot of peer preasure from my friends with the big hp vipers who r in the 8s! One of them just pulled just last night 1550whp through a turbo 400 with his twin turbo viper! That equates to 1800+hp at the flywheel!:turbo::turbo::dropjaw:

Re: Powerglide to transfer case

Ok I'm starting to understand. I did a lot of searching last night about the subject because I truly don't know that much about the "why" behind it, I just know people do it.

I learned PG is the lightest and smallest of the GM auto family, makes sense less parts = less weight and size.

My confusion with this still stands on how do you not run out engine RPM with only two gears?

All the cars I've driven that had a PG seemed to top out relatively quick. I guessing you can avoid that by changing gear ratios and tire sizes, but then it becomes a dog off the line, which was what the TH350/400 was created to fix, or does the fact you can boost launch an AWD negate any of this?

Signed lonely and confused Syclone owner :)

Re: Powerglide to transfer case

According to online calculators. I would have a aprox 88mph top speed in 1st and 175mph speed in 2nd at 7800 rpm. 1.98 / 1.00 trans gears. It has the same final ratio as a 700 in 3rd and th350/400 in 3rd.

If I was building all out, which an 8 is all out and PG would be on my list to consider for sure, combine with maybe some 3.08 gears and it might be worth the weight and complexity for sure.

For that amount of power, it might be worth looking into a built 2 speed TH400, better selection of low gears, or run an Outlaw 2 speed TH400 and it keeps 3 gears, but you can either launch in 1st or 2nd off of the brake. I run an Outlaw 10.5 400 behind a Twin 94mm 632" motor in a 3200# grudge car and really like being able to pick between launch gears depending on track conditions.

Re: Powerglide to transfer case

I thought about a 2 speed 400 but still not going to be as efficient as a race prepped glide. I believe it will be the key in getting the average bowtied syclone in the 8s. + I like to be a little different than the norm doing something that hasn't been done before. I will be selling a adapter for mating the 2 together once I get to mine done.

Re: Powerglide to transfer case

2 speed 400 is only offered with 1.48 1st gear compared to the numerous powerglide gears. I wouldn't think that would work as well as a glide with a 1.98 gear.

Re: Powerglide to transfer case

Just wondering, did you look into a lenco cs2? I know they can be pricey, but its the smallest-strongest trans you can get right? And if you have to make custom parts to mount the transfercase anyway...

Anyone else ever used one? Or have experience with them.

Keep up the work, your build will be sick.
