Alt was disconnected.. it was just spinning on the bracket with no wires attached. Even so I get 13.8 off the output and 19 at dist block

That's the strange thing.... his alternator is disconnected... the truck is running off the battery only.

I don't the voltage reading is real since I don't see that voltage anywhere else in the truck... I have the ECM wired off that post and it shows 13.8

OOPS. I miss that the ALT was Disconnected. 1 ? for you. You said you have the higher voltage even if the MSD was disconnected if I recalled correctly. When you did the test was the power feed still connected to the MSD box ? If the answer is no then I would go with the coil leakage too.

Ah, let's look at Ohm's law here.....

E=IxR
voltage = current x resistance

voltage can go up above 12 if we're passing a set amount of current through a higher resistance.

Where was your black lead grounded during that test??

Before we do this, let's look at your grounding points.... where was the black lead on the meter grounded??

it was grounded at the ALT bracket at that point but I tried grounding to battery and firewall with no change.

So the coil has to be bolted in? Even when I tested with another coil I just plugged it in and let it hang on valve cover.

You were clipped on the stud of the B+ junction block.... did you try touching the red probe to the terminal connectors of the wires?

Yes, and I even tried it to the Fuse for the ECM power feed which is a few inches off the distribution block and made no difference.


I just ran out to the truck and plugged in another coil (disturbing my yankee game! lol) and that didn't change anything either. I just plugged in quick and didn't bolt it to bracket

While you're seeing that 19 volts on the meter, can you take a length of 10 gauge wire and touch between the engine and the negative battery cable and see if the voltage drops?

There's a 2 gauge cable from the engine to the battery now, not understanding this?

I'm not familiar with the MSD internals... so you should check this....

It's there, but is it a good ground? could it be corroded or have a bad terminal end?? Adding another ground, momentarily, will let you see if there is a change.

It's a brand new cable that I just put in. I have it bolted to the open thread boss to the pass side of thermostat housing.
