Re: next mods for mo powah???

i have a gtq74 with a 9/11 3k stall and had very quick boost almost instant. as quick as my cpt66bb on my gn. it is almost all in the tune cam and heads as to what turbo you can run. my 74 on pump gas and 21-23psi felt great. i had a mild cam and stock vortecs.

never ran it at the track but it made 500 to the wheels on pump gas at the dyno. i may sell it, i have one guy that may want it that has asked a week ago. i have not had time to talk to him about it though.

It's going to be tough to get big gains from where you are right now. Two things that come to mind are the cam and turbo. You've got the popular 415 cam but in my opinion it's a pretty lame cam to race with. Look at the specs: http://www.compcams.com/Cam_Specs/CamDetails.aspx?csid=569&sb=0 - it's only a 210/215 cam, which Comp rates up to "5000 RPM" and says "Works with throttle body and sequential port injection with aftermarket chip. Good low end and mid-range."

The cam is popular because everyone likes to play follow the leader instead of truly optimizing their combo with a custom cam. But this cam is designed for 15 second N/A S10s, why would it be the cam of choice in a 600+HP turbo application?

I've got basically stock vortecs and a custom Comp 218/218 115 LSA cam with their XFI fuel injection cam lobes. It seems to make good power to at least 5400. If you have the tuning capability (and I know you do), you could try something as big as a 224/224 like the one TurboTime sells.

A cam swap is a lot of work on these trucks, I just did one last fall with full accessories and A/C (I posted photos of how to move the condensor without disconnecting it) and I bet you're only talking 20-30 HP gain.

I am one of the last people to recommend "big turbos" but in your case since you're already at 26 PSI boost with the PT61, you stand to gain some decent HP by switching to a turbo optimized for the high boost you plan to run. How high of boost can your octane support? Find a turbo with a compressor map that's happy in your desired area. If streetability is important, the PT6780H a.k.a. the "PT67GTQ" is rated near 780 HP and has gone 10.2 @ 131 in Phil Long's Syclone (with 415 cam and ported vortecs) at 25-28 PSI boost I believe.

PS: I also run a Yank converter, a custom "PY3400E" at 2700 RPM stall. Here's a video of my tach during a boost launch:

tooky, i agree on the cam, what about

*09-422-8
- Lift (I/E) - .500/.510
- Duration @ .050 (I/E) - 215/220
- Lobe Separation - 114 deg

i certainly like the lsa a lot better and it bumps the other numbers a tad as well.

is this 'worth' it?

i dont mind the swap i have an extra set of intake gaskets.

Re: next mods for mo powah???

Well IMO the 422 specs "look" better but it's still an off the shelf N/A cam. Do you know any turbo cam experts you can consult? I know Jim Moran (INTMD8) a little bit but not well enough to get him to spec out a V6 turbo cam for me. :) I remember he tested many cams on his 900 HP LT1 and he said strangely enough, the tighter LSAs always made more power. I'm fairly sure his final cam was just like mine, a 218/218 and he made power to 6000 (on a V8 of course). Anyways if you know him better than me, he might be worth bouncing ideas off.

Either way, if you swap the cam and report back, you might be the first guy ever to do a perfect "Before and After Comparison"!! It would definitely be some useful data!

Do you know about the SBC/V6 oil pan / timing cover interference? I Posted up about that on my head&cam swap thread, too. There's a trick to swapping the cam without having to pull the oil pan.

Re: next mods for mo powah???

cam motion made the one that is in my car and it has been really really good to me.

my car is around 1200 horse and it has a 116lsa, single turbo.

i would talk to them about it if nobody here has useful data???

Famous last words from a guy that aborted an attempt to install a V8.

Yea we believe you.

Re: next mods for mo powah???

Cam Motion did a couple of cams for me. They are a good turbo cam shop. Only problem is they have no blanks at this time. I was wanting a cam done recently and they could not get the evenfire blanks anymore. You can run a a 422 to 6,000 rpm and mid tens in a ty easily. I ran my 412 into the high tens at 5,800 rpms with a Ty that weights more than yours. Phil Long ran a 415 into the high nines in a Sy if I am remembering correctly. My opinion is to keep the 415 and the 67gtq. If you go bigger later then you need better block and internals anyway, plus all the other truck goodies to run mid-low tens.

Re: next mods for mo powah???

so per my other post, with the engine out i have an opportunity to switch cams. if the 415 is so mediocre what is better suited to say a 10.9 combination or a 67mm turbo

i am worried about exhaust backpressure now that the hg problem arose.
