Re: New member, from Ma. doing a typhoon swap

ok, took a ton of pics, and got the vin. truck is a 92, its #0797. oh and wicked excited, i was looking more closely inside of it and found the computer! looks like someone took it off an hid it under the seat, which is fantastic for me because the owner of the junkyard, Dave, told me he could have sold the motor about six times before i bought the truck if the computer wasn't missing. its a little squished, but i think the board is ok, ill just put it in the housing of a junk gm computer. Also found the the glove box door, center console door, center of the steering wheel, and the little lumbar pump dohicky. there are deffinitly some good parts there, but i dont wanna get in trouble for trying to sell stuff when im not supposed to yet. Also if there is any one more knowledgeable than me about these trucks that is local and wanted to take a look and talk typhoon that would be cool. feel free to message me, the truck is in middleboro, ma. Oh and only one door thingy.

Note To Self: Do NOT run into something sideways in the Ty.

Wonder if there was anyone in that passenger seat that had some broken legs afterwards.

This makes me cry. I hate seeing rare cars/trucks totaled. Part it out for us so it can live on.

Too bad about the door thingy, oh well.

Looks like that thing was a theft recovery, judging by the steering column anyways. Maybe in a police chase when it was wiped out? Lots of good parts there though, should be able to make some money back, just take your time stripping it down and post the parts on here.

Happy parting

that the plan, i'm really not even that concerned about making that much, just saving everything i can so it doesnt go to waste, im probably gunna devote this sunday t it to make it easier to work with, my dilemma right now is weather i wanna try to get it running before i pull it, the harness looks pretty complete, just the battery ends are cut off.

Do you even know what 5 speed he is refering too? Cause some can be built very cheap. Like the t5 if you cna do the labor yourself can be built to handle 600trq for under 1k.

I have friends with 600whp cars with built 5 speeds in them. You can build most tranmissions to easily handle the power.

I am not a G-body expert, but I used to work with a co-worker who loved them. I have no idea what model transmission it is. The 5 speed G-Body was not available with the V8 engines, it came on the base model/base engine versions of the G-bodies.

My co worker told me the transmission is junk even for a V8 but the linkage and conversion parts were useful and highly sought after.

Also only the Turbo Buicks and 442/HO got the 8.5" rear end, a syty powered G-body will need that rear end.

A V8 swap would be easier that a SyTy turbo engine. These engines are not bullet proof and need some care and maintenance to keep them running properly. It is highly recommend that you go through the basics of the engine operation and hook it upto a scan tool. If dfeal with computer and engines scare you, this probably isn't the motor for you.

Hi and welcome. If you need any tips for doing this swap, you can look in the sy\ty conversion forum and see where I'm over halfway through with a G-body el camino conversion now. I have pics posted and pm me if you need any information. It's been a little while scince I last posted an update, so I will post something to bring the thread up to date.

yeah, the tranny wont hold up long, i cant even figure out what it is, turns out that cutlass wasn't a factory 5 speed car, i pulled up the carpet and the floor is deffinily cut out, ut they are factory g body pedals, which is the important part. When i bought the tranny the car was sitting on the ground wiht no wheels, i, like a dummy just assumed it was going to be a t5, i think its some kind of older 2wd truck tranny. im gunna put the tranny in my 69 chevy c10, it has the 250 six, and a three speed, should be an easy swap and make it alot more enjoyable on long trips. The tranny was behind a olds 350 so i think it will do fine in the little truck. Sucks that i sold the built th350 that was in the monte already

Its probably one of those getrag 5 speeds. If it is they suck and were only rated to handle like 250-300trq or something like that.

You will probably want a transmission with OD especially if your SS still has 3.73 gears. It would have top speed in the 90's. Ideally I would use a 4L80e.

Re: New member, from Ma. doing a typhoon swap

You can just make the factory transmission in the Typhoon a RWD trans (different output shaft and tail housing). It would not take much at all, plus you would want new pump, input and output seals in it anyway from sitting. Take the trans to a tranny shop and when they do that switching it is easy.

I think 90 is a bit of an exageration. I had a t350 in my 79 malibu with 3.55 gears and I used to trap 104ishmph in the 1/4 and still had rpms to spare, I know i had that car going 120mph next to my friends gtp and still had a couple hundred to spare. But OD is def nice if you plan to drive on the freeway.

The stock chip rev limiter is 4600rpm. Our truck do about 99-100 mph in drive with 3.45:1 gears. With 3.73, it works out to 92 mph. Yes you can get around the rev limiter with performance chip, but until you change the Cam the power band is not going shift much at all.

Yea that redline is a bit lower, mine was at 5100rpms i think at 5500 the valves started to float in the malibu. But the gearing of the t350 is different than the 700r4. In my t350 i would shift from 1st to 2nd at 65ishmph.
