Mugged by the welder?

I asked my welder to:

1. Cut and weld the trans cable bracket (steel)
2. Fabricate & weld a bung for the sensor to a new lower CAC. He had to have a bung/nipple (.5" X .375" dia) made by a machine shop and then weld it on.

$90

Is it me?, or am I out of touch with todays labor rates?? :dunno:

Re: Mugged by the welder?

Sounds like his rate is around $100/hr which for custom work is about on par.

It helps to have a buddy on the inside as that welding work should have been less than $50, but having to "make" a bung? that sounds like most of your cost right there.

I dont see that unreasonable especially if he had to fab and machine something. How long did it take him, an hour or 2?

Not in the same business, but Im 45/hr to my web clients and thats well under average rate for the type of work I output.

Re: Mugged by the welder?

I just turned 2 aluminum bungs on the lathe from rod stock and then drilled/tapped them for NPT....that alone took 1.5 hours.
Crap...go price the tools and upkeep and see if his price seemed cheap then ??;)

$90 dollars sounds like a good rate.....especially if he did a nice tig welded job!?

Sounds about right for labor rate.
I paid a case of Corona to get all of my IC pipes welded. So it certainly heps to have a friend or a friend of a friend.

Ok it's me then.

I guess the machine shop at my old job spoiled me since they would make this for me for nothing -or I would go in at lunch time and do it myself. -Too bad I do not work there anymore. :(

Definetly a mig welder in the future toy category.

Thanks for the reality check fellas.

Yep, folks who don't make chips for a living generally don't understand how much work is involved to make something from scratch. Getting set up, rounding up the tools and prepping the stock can take more time than to make the actual part sometimes... Back before I was making chips for a living, I had a local machine shop make me two brass bungs for my intercooler. One to monitor the temperature going in and the other to monitor it going out. I even drafted up all the dimensions on a sheet of paper. They had them both done about 3-4 days later complete with a $230 price tag @ $115 a piece... Our shop rate is $100 an hour so, it sounds to me like you got a reasonable price.

Re: Mugged by the welder?

Its a crappy thing to have pay for. I am going through a lot of this myself, and always have:lol:
When I had my trans lines made steel braided, I paid a pretty penny for that. Custom stuff, is rarely cheap to do. When it is the small stuff like what you are talking about, it definitely starts to nickel and dime you to death. The small stuff for my engine rebuild is costing me almost double the price for the "big" stuff. But, it's the price we pay. You should see the look on some peoples faces when I give them a $60 bill to replace a sprinkler head, $50/hr, $10 for head and nozzle. And I am in and out in 5-15 minutes.
