Re: megasquirt?

it looks really interesting i was following it for awhile. the only part i was worried about was the assemble it yourself part. but i found you can order them from another source already built

That and there was some question to the knock reading and use of that info as far as fuel cut and what not. Since I will be tuning primarily on knock (alky) that's going to be important for me.

Re: megasquirt?

There's tons of cool crap out there that Syclone owners aren't into. I love the idea of the megasquirt but would wait until ultra megasquirt comes out before upgrading, or use megasquirt-avs, an offshoot design that has some pretty cool features.

As for knock sensing, ever see a J&S safeguard? It supports knock detection and correction for each cylinder individually, as well as manually adjusting the timing individually on each cylinder.

UMS and megasuirt-avs are even talking about supporting ion-sense in the future, now that would be some cool shit. Beats paying 20k for the smartfire system. Seems like it's a year or two off though, but I'll keep watching it.

Re: megasquirt?

So, this J&S you speak of... does the MegaSquirt have this?

Re: megasquirt?

Which? The individual cylinder knock correction? That's the J&S Safeguard (google it), although if the hardware was there you could program something to do that in megasquirt. I'm betting UMS (Ultra MegaSquirt) will have the power to do that, the current version just doesn't have the memory for it.

The MegaSquirt guys are also throwing around the idea of writing in some better support for false knock rejection, like the newer ls1 computers have. I was amazed at how much work the newer ecm's do to eliminate false knock, no wonder we have so much trouble with it.

Hmm now i wonder how my Bigstuff 3 ecu does on eliminating false knock?

Re: megasquirt?

My Boss has three Mega-squirt systems currently running in his cars.....a 3rd gen street port Turbo Rx-7, 1st gen Rx-7 turbo street port, and a 2nd gen Rx-7 rag top.
He loves them. And his cars are smooth and STRONG too ! His slowest car runs 11.90's consistantly.
I'm going to install one as a suplimental injector brain running off the MAP sensor so I can turbo charge a 91 525i BMW 6 cyl. The factory ecu will handle all controls and be unaware of the boost and extra fuel.Rising rate FMU and upgrade injectors and I think I'll be set.
We know of five others locally also up and running boosted cars on the older Super Wad ! ( I mean Mega-squirt) lol.

Re: megasquirt?

I don't mean to steal the topic, but has anyone heard or seen this setup?

DIY engine performance became very popular at around 2000-2001 with entry-level injection-only (batch) systems, that VEMS took to a different level with the added functionality of sequential injection ignition, direct ignition, WideBand O2, Detonation Detection and Exhaust Gas Temperature sensing and included space for hardware expansion and customizable functions.

Re: megasquirt?

Speaking of BigStuff, I'll have to look around but I believe there are a few people using MegaSquirts to control electronic tranny's, both as a standalone and as part of the ecm. Have to dig around if anyone is interested, maybe I can find where I read it again.

The new ls1 ecm's (as well as plenty of other's I'm sure) have pretty cool knock anti-falsing. Basically, they allow adjusting how loud the knock has to be for it to count based on rpm so you can raise the minimum noise level at higher rpm to account for valvetrain noise increasing, as well as ignoring all sounds except those coming during the knock window of opportunity, so if the noise doesn't happen between a few degrees of TDC it will be ignored as knock couldn't really happen 80 degrees before TDC, and they'll also listen for changes in noise, using the past few revolutions as a baseline, if the noise changes suddenly then the ecm knows it's knock, if the change is gradual then it can assume it's increasing valvetrain noise.

Might be more to it but that's all I know.

Re: megasquirt?

Can you run the MS and the factory ECM with the Ultimate chip simultanously or alternated? How does the MS works with nitrous? Thanks.

Re: megasquirt?

Well I'm glad to see this bringing more attention than when I mentioned it a while back.

I personally might be trying it on my new setup when it's all done.

I checked the post because I thought it was a porn but, then I'm a pervert. Oh yea this sounds like a perfect fit for us cheap skates and computer tuning dummies. Cheap amd w/tech and tuning support. Sounds good. Keep us posted.

Re: megasquirt?

any SyTyer's actively using Megasquirt? Looks like the MS gurus are getting the autotune functionality working. This is pretty interesting. Looks like it would be a good match for the syty's although i didn't see any mention of KS or TCC lockup options.

anyone have any experience they'd like to share?
