LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

My understanding is that the stock rotor does provide the #1 reference signal while the ecm coupled with the ignition module provides the tach signal. The dip switches also tell whether the motor is 4, 6, or 8 cylinders.

I also noticed protosy has the trigger hooked up to the #6 post on the cap. I guess this wouldn't matter if the distributor is rotated to make this the new #1. I don't think this was intentional was it?

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

Here is the wiring diagram protosy made up. http://i95.photobucket.com/albums/l123/detroitsy/edistwiring.jpg

If you are going this route and you use the crane optical triggers, buy two and return one. I ordered one and waited three weeks. Come to find out it was defective and had a direct short. I then exchanged it for a second and three weeks later received another and it too was bad. I was pissed at this point so I ended up building my own optical trigger with a infrared led and phototransistor. It cost about three dollars and saved me the hassle along with three weeks time. If you know basic electronics this may be the way to go.

Oh, another thing, the wire colors on the crane trigger you would receive now are different. If I remember correctly the white and black are swapped and red is replaced with gray. I forget exactly so you may want to research this a little.

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

you think we could use the cam sensor listed earlier? and if i remember right the crank trigger has three teeth, so just need the edist, coils and harnesses?

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

I just picked up an E-dist & harness for cheap.
I hope to reproduce this on the Sy as time allows.

Now to find some coil packs.

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

I'm really interested in doing this for my 2001 4.3L. Anyone know who has done this install on the newer vortec ?

Impressive 4.3L Chevy V-6 puts down 501 hp and 437 lb-ft at 12 PSI

They used coil packs on it...

I sent an email to this guy:

Thanks for your interest in our products. Unfortunately we do not build a 'plug-and-play' system for your application. Our ignition system is a completely stand alone system that cannot be controlled by the factory pcm, or use the factory crank sensor. Our ignition systems are most commonly used on carbureted and mechanically injected racing engines. For EFI engines our TEC line of stand alone fuel and ignition systems are typically used, but no plug and play option exists, and they are not intended for use in pollution controlled vehicles. I'm not sure what you are using the vehicle or engine for, but there may be some thing we can help you with, however it doesn't seem to fit the outline you have described. Feel free to contact me about anything else I may be able to answer for you.

Sincerely,

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

I don't know what happened to the GP but it was probably more trouble than it was worth. That and FAST has discontinued the eDist. Here are my results a lot of trial and error but it runs great. I have never seen a more stable ignition at idle and it doesn't burp or miss at idle. If you look at the timing light you never see any change in its timing. The timing hits so accurately you would never believe the motor is running.

I had to modify one of the brackets but everything looks factory.

I cut off all the terminals on the cap and smoothed everything out. I think it turned out great!

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

Nice job.
I've got everything except the plug wires & motivation to complete it.

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

Buy some ls1 plug wires and also some 90 degree boots. The 90 degree boots really help to clean up the look of the wires since they hug the block. I left the number 1 plug straight just so I can hook the timing light up.

If I was to do this again, I would definitely keep the optical trigger. Much less expensive, less weight, and just as accurate.

Re: LS1 Coil Setup - RUNNING!

I know you said that the e-dist is discontinued.. did "FAST" make it then?

What else would I need to make the conversion... if it's possible I want to do this while I've got the wife's Typhoon apart this winter along with all the other fabrication I'm doing.

Please post or e-mail me if you could.. I'd really appreciate it!
