Just installed Ultimate, no good?

I installed my ultimate and 3 bar last night, did exactly as the instructions said. I started the truck and the check engine light stayed on. After a couple hours I decided to just put my 2bar and stock setup back. Now I can't keep the truck running and as soon as I give it gas it dies. The check engine light is back on with the stock set up. Could I have damaged my OE computer and/or chip. I reset the computer by disconnecting the battery. I have triple checked everything.

Re: Just installed Ultimate, no good?

What code is set? One time while changing MAP sensors I managed to bend a pin in the conector. I dont know how I did it, but it happened. You probably did something similiar when you where swapping MAP's, or made some other error. You can also damage your ecm by a static shock. Make sure you touch metal before handling the ECM to discharge any static electricity you may have stored on yourself.

Check the code first, then post back.

Did you piggy back the stock chip properly? Check and light poor running truck leads me to believe that your running in limp mode.

Re: Just installed Ultimate, no good?

OK, I triple checked every wire. I plugged my datamaster in to check the code. Well, it says no PCM detected. The truck starts, runs like crap, high idle, runs rich, as soon as I give it gas it dies. Reminded that I am running my 2bar map and stock PCM and EPPROM. My best guess at this point is that I fried my EPPROM. How can I check? My second guess is that I fried my PCM. How can I check? So I decided to put the 3bar map and ultimate in for one last try. The PCM is detected but I said it was early. Sounds like it datamaster picked up the ultimate but not the piggy back EPPROM. I am either on to something, or on something!

Re: Just installed Ultimate, no good?

I am having the same problems. Grounded myself out well even went as far as disconnecting the battery.....I am running a stock set up with 412 cam, 33# injectors, cat, stock turbo, stock pipe, 3 bar map sensor.....I had a hypertech chip in and it was running like sh*t too...but it did run......changed out the hypertech...put the STG ultimate chip in which is set for stock....my symptoms are exactly like Qwerty's....engine has a rough idle and when you step on the gas....it dies....check engine light stays on....messed with the boost controller a little bit but to no avail...then...I put the 2 bar map sensor in, and it would crank up.....but had a mysteriously high idle...and when I revved it a bit....the idle would stay high...and slowly go back down...but it wouldn't go lower than 2500 RPMs...

I got frustrated.....put the stock setup (just the EPPROM I think)in the computer without the hypertech or STG chips.......and put the 2 bar map sensor back in again......runs fine....engine light is off.......but I would prefer to have that Ultimate working for me...anyone have any suggestions or anywhere I could send the chip to be checked out?
Thanks.....

Constant CE light is ECM's "backup" mode.

Both sound like bad connections, or a fried ECM.
Check the pins in the bottom of the MEMCAL socket that you plug the piggyback board into... they like to get bent/folded over.

A backwards install (even for a few seconds) can smoke things.

Try the basics - 100% stock memcal, in the memcal socket. If it works, problem is with your aftermarket chip. If it doesn't, suspect ECM or bad wiring harness. Check both ECM fuses.

ECMs can be found in non-syty applications- '88 Quad 4 cars. Look for 1227749.

From Ludis' crossreference:

Description: 730 w/ one missing quad driver, w/ additional injector driver FET
Application: 1987-90 2.0 OHC L4 PFI turbo “M” LT3
1987-88 2.3 DOHC L4 PFI “D” LD2
1991-93 truck 4.3 V6 PFI turbo “Z” LB4

Re: Just installed Ultimate, no good?

So, I'll try to make this short. I limped truck up to auto zone and had them connect a $3000 scanner up to the truck, it would not work. Same problem I had with my lap top, would not talk to ECM. Then, swapped computer out with new one. Same problem. So I figure I got two things left to check. Bad wiring or bad EPPROM. Went to Justins and tried my computer in his truck, same problem. BAD EPPROM. Test his EPPROM in my computer, worked fine. Anybody got an EPPROM for sale, I have Ultimate to install. Thanks to Justin, Dennis, and Dig for the help. Hopefully Dig has a EPPROM for sale. I have posted a request for an EPPROM in the Parts wanted sections.
Thanks Everybody.

Re: Just installed Ultimate, no good?

AAH!!

"FP" is fuel pressure, sorry i just got it, how do i set the fuel pressure, how do i know what its settiung is at the moment ?

Do i need a fuel pressure guage installed ?

Re: Just installed Ultimate, no good?

a fuel pressure gauge will help a lot, you can pick up one with a shrader valve and attach it at the fuel rail.

you'll need an adjustable fuel pressure regulator to adjust the fuel pressure, RPM, turbotime, detroitturbo will sell that unit.

Re: Just installed Ultimate, no good?

ok, i have an adjustable fuel pressure regulator i think its the small alloy cylinder with a bolt in the top of it, its located on the back of the engine block just off to the left as you look from the front.

My main problems at present are:

1. CE Light is always on

2. I cant get the DM to connect to the Ultimate chip at all - its a brand new chip

3. Its running 27 degrees advanced timing and its knocking its head off

4. The Ultimate chip gauge in the piller pod has the red knock light on permanantly

5. Its over boosting like hell !!

If you havent guessed im new to this and am learning fast, the Sy runs ok so i think the chip is working as its not limping and the engine revs out to the redline, but im worried that i a ma damaging it by not really knowing where to start when it comes to tuning. This is why im asking so many questions.

If i could get the DM to connect maybe i would stand a chance of knowing whats happening inside the engine.

Does anyone have any ideas or the correct way i should connect my laptop up to the cable, i ahve tried the com 3 port but no other ports come up. It is very frustrating !!

Re: Just installed Ultimate, no good?

Sorry the Sy spec is:

PT52 Turbo
33lb injectors
atr double pumper
mccoys air/air intercooler
ultimate chip
air intake kit
3 bar map sensor

No codes are flashing (except the normal code 12) on the engines dashboard diagnostic

is your ultimate for stock injectors?

on a side note you might wanna think about getting bigger injectors with that setup. then have the ultimate reburnt for them

If the CE is on, and you can't get DM to connect, it isn't running normally.

Put the stock 2-bar chip back in, with the 2-bar map sensor. Pull the ECMB fuse for 10 seconds or so, then re-test all of the above. If the CE goes away and the other stuff returns to fairly normal, odds are that you have an installation problem with the Ultimate.

In general, it's never a good idea to start adding parts until you're sure the truck works well in stock form.
