Intercooler

I want to improve on the stock water to air intercooler that comes on the Ty but want to keep the basic system intact. So when you look under the hood, you see a what looks like a stock Ty. So can I do this by changing out the ic pump to a bigger one that flows more or do I have to change out the ic too? And if so, where do I get the larger ic from?
Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Intercooler

You can get an upgraded IC pump from Ron Gregory at www.autoperformanceengineering.com It is a direct bolt-in replacement for the stock pump.

ATR sells a larger IC, but from what I've heard/read it's not worth the cost.

Fill your IC system with 80% distilled water / 20% coolant + 1 bottle of Water Wetter.

You'll also want to hot-wire your IC pump to turn on when your truck turns on so things get flowing right away.

Re: Intercooler

I have fooled with the water IC quite a bit, using a bunch of thermocouples and a data logger. For what it's worth.. I think hot wired pump is free and good, Rubber hose is cheap and good, I haven't been able to flow "too much" water as to reach the point of no gain when using stk pump<jabsco<sureflo<AMT brass pumps. Fan on lower unit is good (stuck in low speed traffic) Scoop on lower is cheap and good. I am able to get about the same result with an insulated upper unit and an ATR large unit all other things the same. The un-solveable problem with all of this is heat soak. Once you shut down for 15 minutes and restart, or boost a couple times in a row, you are soaked and screwed. the ATR doesn't soak as easy, but when it does, it's more hopeless, and it is bigger and closer to engine/downpipe and heavy so... You can make the water based ststem about twice as good as stock, or ice it and do even better, or go A/A shed some weight and have slightly better than all the above.

Re: Intercooler

so I was thinking of replacing my stock IC pump with a stronger one and replacing the metal lines with plastic ones and reroute per the syty archives. I am on a budget and this seemed like a decent upgrade that wouldnt kill the bank.my question is can I hot-wire so the pump is constantly on even though my engine is 100% stock ,no chipping or anything. also, if the intercooler performs better switched on all the time why didnt they make like that from the factory?

Damn... lets post that link again then:

I wasnt there at the factory, but suspect emissions may have something to do with their original strategy.

Re: Intercooler

The lime green would be your wire. Get the smallest wire you can find (if I remember right, I might have had "doorbell" wire) Pinch it in there and run the other end to the nearest ground. Try and thread it along the yellow wire connecter (parallel) so it all fits under the relay. It might take you a few tries to get it just right. The arrow end goes to the firewall and the other end gets pinched.

Re: Intercooler

I live in LA so I am close to RPM. I might do that. Just so I am clear , i can do the relay and it wont have any adverse affects even though I dont have a chip. so running all the time is the way to go! also, do you think it is worth it to change all the lines to the heater hose and reroute them or just simply replace the stock pump with the RPM one?

Re: Intercooler

My friend makes a set-up that will add a chiller box that uses freon to super chill the water before it goes through your intercooler.
Called the Ice-ee chiller.
He had made them for for Lightnings, Harley edition Supercharged trucks & Ford Cobras supecharged.

I know he still has the stuff to make more kits.
Maybe if we bug him he will put one on mine so he knows what all is need for a complete kit?

Re: Intercooler

Does this mean you have to run your AC condenser during the run? Or will it be effective enough in the staging lanes?

Yes you run the A/C in the staging lanes.
You can leave the A/C on when you race also. At W.O.T. the A/C compressor turns off .

So,,, as your in the staging lanes while running the A/C your intake manifold & all accociated intake items/parts will be chillen also.

Re: Intercooler

so I was just getting ready to change my lines and I went to drain the lower IC from the petcock and it rusted over. my question is how do you release it? should I grab it with pliers and twist counter clockwise? how do I open it?

Re: Intercooler

If it's rusted shut and you are draining it anyway...remove it and replace with a new one. It's made of brass normally and using pliars to open it will only serve to ensure that you will be replacing it.
