I think the adventure of the drive down is half the fun of the trip. When i did the Hot Rod Power Tour in 2005 i drove the sy a little over 3200 miles in 8 days. It was a little scary but it was also a huge amount of fun. When i did that the truck still had the 4.3, a 700r4 with NO lockup, was running mid 11's, and it still managed to get 23mpg coming up 95 on the drive home.

Unless you have a really insane engine that is meant for the track only (which in our case the turbo makes up for having to have a huge cam or race-gas-only compression), or a very low mileage/show winning quality paint job, i think your just missing a big part of the fun and adventure of the road trip there and back.
