How to install stock arm coil overs

New Parts for Old Trucks
I finally uploaded my pics to my computer and figured I would whip up a quick write up .
First I would like to say a big thanks to Mike @ RPM , he hooked me up with these qa1's and hypercoil shocks . He also machined down the spring cups so the coils would fit the shocks .The shocks didnt come with a pn on them but I do know the coils are 2.25 od 600lb'ers. Now to the fun part ..

Assemble the shocks and get that truck off the ground onto some stands , or the lift if you are ballin .

Remove the torsion bar adjusting bolts and nuts that secure the crossmember to the frame underneith the cab/bed .After you take the wheels off next, remove the cotter pin and nut holding the upper control arm to the spindle on either d-side or pass-side .Directions are the same for both. When removing the nut , place the jack under the lower control arm , because its going to want to drop . Slowly drop the jack until the lower arm is down enough to slide the bars forward until the torsion key drops on the floor, then take them and the crossmember out .Trash is a good home for it all, your never going to need that stuff again .
IMG_1539.jpg

Next , lift the upper control arm out of the way so you can get a good look at things .
IMG_1540.jpg

The liner you see in the pic is so metal dust doesnt get in the engine bay , your about to do some grinding . Its not much , and may not be necessary , but i did it to be certain there wouldnt be any complications .You can see how little I took off here .
IMG_1542.jpg

After that , your shock should fit right in . Dont forget to splash some paint onto the fresh grinds .Stacked 1/2 inch washers fit perfectly for spacing the shock and one day I plan on replacing them with exact fit spacers . The entire install I give a difficulty level of "beginner" , but syty frames arent all 100% identical so some more or less grinding may be required . Heres what you are shooting for .

Then adjust the coilovers until you have a nice driving stance and enjoy .

Hopefully this can be helpful to someone .

So how would you rate the ride and handeling compared to the stock torsion bars?

Re: How to install stock arm coil overs

I havent ridden on them yet to compare the 2 . Damn state is giving me a hrad time getting my truck tagged with this rebuit title . I have to jump through some hoops and get it inspected some day . Problem is I have to take of 2 days to do it , one to go down and setup up everything ,then another since they only do inspections on tuesdays and fridays . They cant tell me anymore until I go down there in person . My work schedule is way booked , so the sy just sits . One day I actually will drive this pita , one day ...

Oh yeah , total cost was around 550 shipped .

I'd put tags from another vehicle (of mine) on it and at least taken it for a spin around the block.....But that's just me, I'm willing to bend the rules a little bit....

Re: How to install stock arm coil overs

Seems like low intrest but I wanted to follow up with weight numbers before I forget . Using the stock arms and ditching all the torsion bar equip , I added up 70 lbs removed with my bathroom scale .

Re: How to install stock arm coil overs

I'd be interested in a set (or 2).

70 lbs, huh? Seems like a lot....or maybe it's been so long since I held 2 torsion bars and a crossmember in my arms that I can't remember how heavy they are.

Re: How to install stock arm coil overs

Hey hood , yeah it all came out .
Each torsion bar was 17 lbs , the crossmember was 16 lbs , and both torsion keys, bolts ,frame mounts were right at 20lbs . I didnt account for the diff in shocks though. My stockers were 5 each and the qa1 w/ coils were 10 each . I had it all written down and lost the pad somewhere around here , so I wanted to post it before memory failed me .

Anyone intrested can pm or call mike . He already sets up qa1's this way for his coilover kits , and all you have to ask for is a pair of front qa1's with 600lb springs for a syty .

This is officially on my "before end of summer" to-do-list. Looks great. The tubular A arms definately look way better but just being able to ditch torsion bars and that POS cross member would be well worth it. Cant wait to hear how it rides and handles.

The nice part also is you don't have to shell out the whole $1,800 at once. You can buy just the shocks and then later down the road upgrade to the tubular control arms and already have shocks to fit them.

Re: How to install stock arm coil overs

since you're (MRKING) are the only one (that i know of) to do this and you haven't driven the truck to find out how it drives...i'm (and maybe others) still a little leary but, it does look promising.

bite the bullet....steal a tag from one of your other cars...put it on your truck and give us some feedback.

Those numbers make sense, with a total of 60# of weight saings. I initially was think 'How can that be?' since my coilovers save 70# but I didn't take the crossmember out.

Ild bet as long as he sttays on bak streets that even if he did get pulled over(unlikely) that the cop would understand. Just dont go cruising.

Re: How to install stock arm coil overs

I have driven my Sy unregistered around my neighborhood, but I am very cautious and nervous when doing so. My biggest concern isn't getting a ticket, it getting into an accident and have an unisured vehicle and liability I could be faced with because of that.

DO NOT!!! AND I REPEAT DO NOT!!! DRIVE WITH THE PLATE FROM ANOTHER CAR.

If you get pulled over you will get a ticket for Fictitious Plates. If you get pulled over without a plate or with expired tags 99% of the time the District Attorney will throw out the ticket if you get licence plates before your court date. NOT SO with a Fictitious Plates ticket. The fine is something crazy here in Colorado. Well over $500...

So I would still take it for a drive. Just call and get insurance and then drive it. If you get pulled over have the documentation that you are filling out to get it registered and inform the officer that you were testing the roadworthyness of the car before you needed to get it inspected. They understand how bad the system can be and will normally give you a break!

Re: How to install stock arm coil overs

Did you have to reinforce the upper shock tower? Are they meant to hold the front weight of the truck? If this setup works and is safe, why even bother getting tubular A-arms? just for looks?

If his weights are correct, the tubular A-Arms are still 26#'s lighter, plus some the A-arms have better ball joints angle for lower trucks (as opose to original 4x4 design that was intended for a truck 2" higher than stock SyTy) 26# is a lot of weight to remove from the suspension mass.

As for reinforcing the upper mounts, try searching about, it been discussed a bunch time. I haven't done mine, but its on my to do list.
