My "guess" just by the reading. One of your burnt wires was grounded out to burn up..whether it be the power in the starter solenoid, or ignition switch, possibly relay. If I were to think about it further, which wires are hot when the ignition is off? Most of the areas do. Somewhere one of these grounded out when he shut it off..started heating as he exited the vehicle, luckily he came back soon enough to see it in progress. Im doubting the starter engaged, motor may have still been running when he got back to it or someone would have noticed maybe..or even he would have noticed it as soon as he shut off the engine. Maybe I'm stating the obvious, but it is the basic facts to go off of.
