My "guess" just by the reading. One of your burnt wires was grounded out to burn up..whether it be the power in the starter solenoid, or ignition switch, possibly relay. If I were to think about it further, which wires are hot when the ignition is off? Most of the areas do. Somewhere one of these grounded out when he shut it off..started heating as he exited the vehicle, luckily he came back soon enough to see it in progress. Im doubting the starter engaged, motor may have still been running when he got back to it or someone would have noticed maybe..or even he would have noticed it as soon as he shut off the engine. Maybe I'm stating the obvious, but it is the basic facts to go off of.

Hey guys, just got home from the bar (working).

Dave is right, the steering column had a LOT of play. I've heard of many syty's with loose tilt columns, and I never knew the mechanics of the ignition switch/rod/key position until Dave pulled the column out. I did notice that I had to move the column into a certain position to "start" the truck, otherwise I would get a "purple-wire" condition that I heard so much about on this forum. I assumed that this was at least one reason to do the purple wire upgrade.

Dave - I will give you a shout when I wake up...I'm signing off! ;)

These parking lots hold several hundred cars. There's 2,500 cars in the junk-yard. These places are huge. There's no way anyone could "find the owner" of a car in the lot in distress. This "unattended" thing is moot. I mentioned this possibility to Nick the first day we were working on it. We both laughed at the possibility.

Ok Dave,

I totally forgot about that guy. If I recall correctly, he has already sold that truck.
