Hmmm maybe this is why my boost is so low....

I should have checked this earlier. For those of you that still have catalytic convertors, there is an easy way to check if its gone bad. Aside from hitting it with a hammer...

Run the truck up to temp, use an IR thermometer and check the inlet and outlet of the cat. If the outlet isn't about a 100 degrees hotter than the inlet, it's bad.
In my case the inlet was 100 degrees hotter than the outlet.
And for us Californian's, Magnaflow makes a 50 state legal replacement.

I can't wait to get it back together and hit the DM's....

Oh ya man should almost be able to at least half pay for a new converter.

That reminds me, I probably can get a few bucks for it huh?

If you find anyone local who'll buy them let me know I've got a couple. Last time I checked no one seems to buy them anymore after the level of theft increased on them.

I just broke mine out a couple weeks ago. The cat was cooking the floorboard in the truck & was creating a no power issue on the truck.

Chased a boost issue for a few months before pinpointing the clogged cat. At least it's something stupid and easy to fix

I wonder how many trucks are running poorly because of this situation ? Or halfway to this level of blockage . You should be able to get something for this ,they are definitely worth something . Last year one of my cousins had their's stolen while he was on vacation . Must have been a cordless sawzall or something similar to reach up under the car with as low as it is .

Im running a Magnaflow 3" OBDI cat and it works great, passed smog really easily. Random Technologies has some really nice cats, CA legal too.

Here is a pic of the old vs. new cat. The new one is a Magnaflow Direct Fit - CARB exempt CA Legal cat.

It doesn't quite fit the heat shield though. Might have to make some brackets or something.

We're only talking about $100 a piece so I'm not super concerned on how much I can get, I just need to find someone period. I called about 5 recycle yards and none will buy CAT's anymore.

Because CA passed a law last year it's a little more difficult to find a CAT that will fit a 3" application. Everything is based off stock replacement now, they don't allow you to search by dimensions, only by vehicle. It took awhile, but I was able to find a full size Chevy van that had factory 3" exhaust and only used a T1 CAT (most newer 3" seem to be T2 setup).

I ended up getting the Mangaflow as well, part number was 45009 in case anyone ever needs it. This is NOT a direct bolt it replacement. I was unable to find a CAT that was the same design as our factory one in a 3" size. This will require some fab to be put in, but if you want a CARB legal CAT that's 3" this was the best one I could find.

a lot of recycle yards wont take cats- you need to call a "core buyer" the same guy who takes batterys/alternators/racks/ect. We do a ton of fabricated exhaust work in my shop- I usualy replace cats with magnaflow high flow cats.

we sell the old converters to a core buyer- he will take your drivers lisence and everything. platinum has gone down over the past year- a cat the size of a stock syty last year we were getting around 120$, now its bout 75$

Re: Hmmm maybe this is why my boost is so low....

Finally, after weeks of checking everything I get the boost I have been waiting for.

Not bad for a completely stock truck that sat for 12 years and has 130k miles on it.

I replaced the catalytic convertor with the magnaflow and also an RPM 3" catback exhaust.
