HEEELLLPPPP Front axle woes?

Will the axle turn? Sounds like you should be clear of the spline but could be catching on the bearings. Look at the pic and you can see how it could snag on the bearings.

Re: HEEELLLPPPP Front axle woes?

I got it out. Pretty easy after I loosened the shaft holder then under the body. The axle was catching a piece of the body and I needed a tad bit more clearance.

Problem now is no one has anything close to this ring. mine doesn't have the hole like a traditional snap ring so I'm SOL until I can get to a GM dealer Monday.

I'll load my pics up in a bit. BTW I still the GM engineers are retarts!

EDIT: Not sure what the ring is supposed to feel like but it still feels pretty firm. I dunno.

Re: HEEELLLPPPP Front axle woes?

My part number came off the bag the snap ring was in when I ordered it from GMC. When the GMC dealer pulled it for a 91 Sy the GM # was 14041989 . So I dont know about GM Part # 344171.
Yes its not the traditional snap ring with the holes for pliers. It works more like the snap ring on an impact that holds the sockets on. Its more like a piece of spring steel that holds the axle in.
I'm pretty sure your not the only one cursing the GM engineers. I have many times and sure I will for many more yrs.
When I ordered the snap ring I would try both part #s. Might be just a cross referenced # but you dont want to end up with the wrong one. I took my old one with me so I could eyeball them together.

Well according to that chart I posted your part # is it. I have to py before they order so i'll check again.

I used to work for the local GM parts dept. back in the day. One guy that's still there will know the number without looking it up.

Lots of work for such a small cheap part. Got to love it. I bought extra so when it happens again I'll have one ready to go in.

Re: HEEELLLPPPP Front axle woes?

Good information guys!

I "think" I have a outer bearing going bad on the front diff. of my wife's Typhoon. There's alot of play that I don't like.
She's said that when backing up it's made a big clunk from under the truck. She can't tell where exactly but I'm guessing it's the front diff. It's done it like 4 times in the last year.
I'm replacing the front diff and clips along with a gilbert prop shaft.
I've changed the transfer case fluid and it came out clean. So I'm thinking it's in decent shape.
Rear end fluid has been changed all appears good in there too.
So.. I'm left with the front diff to sort out and repair.
Thanks for the good tips!
Scott~

Is the gasket on the back of the spindle just a dust shield of sorts? Cause no one seems to have it listed and I'm putting it back together without it.

Re: HEEELLLPPPP Front axle woes?

Well my worst fear came true last night. Bad lower ball joint had to be replaced.

After a few minute with a grinder, chisel, a punch, and a big ****ing hammer it fell right out. =)

Today I get to tighten everything back up and see how I did. I'm not gonna lie....I'm nervous.

That's minor surgery...... :)

Wait till somthing major comes up!

I had to replace all the front end parts when we first got my wife's truck. Every ball joint, controll arm bushing, steering part the entire front end. That's alot of fun now!

You'll do fine.. the job is streight forward ...
Good luck,Scott~

Re: HEEELLLPPPP Front axle woes?

And for the lower ball joints.....

Used a grinder to get most of the head off the rivet, then chiseled the rest....

Then I took a hole punch and started pounding down what was left with a punch and.....

New one bolts right up.

*now I've added key words like ball joint in hopes that when someone searches they'll find this useful.

Re: HEEELLLPPPP Front axle woes?

I used an air chisel to shear mine off and the to punch out what was left. Easier than grinding, but if you dont have an air chisel a grinder is next best. Let us know when you finally drive it. Hope alls fixed. If your luck is like mine it'll never end. I just put a Sy rear and front diffs in my Braphoon project and I hit a chunk of steel today running abour 75mph ruining a brand new Nitto 555 285/40ZR-17 dented the drive shaft. When I put my spare on it was flat. Finally got someone to air it up for me and it wobbles like crazy. Well, I put on another rim and its not the rims, must have bent the axle somehow. Just put it in 3 wkend ago. So My 4th will be putting in a new rear axle shaft. It never ends. :banghead:
