Re: Goodbye old & rusted...The Ty gets updated.

Velocity stack arrived Friday & luckily the fit is really good.

I decided to mix it up with the Typhoon plaque. I still need to smooth & polish the plaque then have the top of the intake flycut so it's nice and flat.
I'm pretty sure that I will powdercoat the lettering to make it stand out.

What fuel rail is that, that isnt stock is it? I was noticing where the supply fuel ties in.

Re: Goodbye old & rusted...The Ty gets updated.

I think I'm gunna do the Typhoon logo on the TB plate though, similar to the one you have in the pictures near the top of page 2... That way I have both logos :p

Definately powdercoat the lettering, the first thing I notice when I look under a syty's hood is if "syclone" was painted red.... I think It should have come like that from the factory...

How do those get painted so perfectly anyway? Is it slowly painted on with a tiny little brush to get it just right? or is there a masking procedure to this? I'm thinking about doing that myself with some high temp engine paint....

It's a stock Syclone rail. The inlet is farther forward than the Ty fuel rail.

I'll have to try that phrase on my wife. :rotf: I can see the look on her face already.

Thanks.

Re: Goodbye old & rusted...The Ty gets updated.

I was going to take the TB in to have it powdercoated today, but decided I'd give it a try since I had the supplies to do it.
This TB is a Matt Blum rebuild. It took me forever to disassemble it due to Matts thorough attention to detail (loctite & peening of the screws).
It didn't turn out to bad considering I only have one of the Black & Decker airless powdercoating guns.
It just makes it difficult when doing a 2 stage like the chrome, because it has a base/color coat then a clear coat. The second coat is difficult to get to stick because of the added dielectric properties of the color coat. You really need a gun that you can increase the voltage bias on to get even application of the clear coat.
Anyways, here it is: Notice you can see the o-ring seal in the brass shaft bushing.
I should have the rest of the throttle linkage back from the chrome shop this week so I can put the TB back together.

Here you can see what the TB looked like before.

I spent some of my EbAY earnings.
Water pump (Endurashine), Chrome Alternator & 3" QTP cutout.
Also got the chrome TB linkage back from plating shop.

Rick, you'll need to hand out UV shields when you pop the hood on a sunny day!

Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out where to hang the crystal chandelier. ;)

Once I get the motor out I need to cleanse the nasty firewall.

Spent most of my time cleaning up the wiring & firewall rats nest.
Still need to organize all the wiring to the alternator.
What rating are the fusible links?
I want to cut them out & install a couple of fuse holders.

Finally got off my duff and got the motor out today.

Hey look! A broken drivers side motor mount!
2997387350_801f057903.jpg

I'd had a knocking noise & was pretty sure it was rod knock. So I wanted to open up the bottom and look at the bearings & replace them if needed.
Here's some of the rods.

Nothing really bad other than worn out. Kinda what I expected.

Journals on the crank all looked good.
Ugh! But the previous owners did not maintain the motor well. I measured the rod journals and they were 2.245, nice & smooth.

Here are the main bearings. Anybody notice anything special about these?

I thought that this motor was OE, but after seeing the aluminum mains it makes me think it was a warranty replacement.
Does anybody know if it was standard issue to install aluminum main bearings in our motors?
I hadn't planned on a complete tear down & rebuild, but maybe at the least I'll have everything cleaned & cylinders honed for a pattern & leave it at that.

What are your plans for a motor build? We all know it is going to be a full re-build. You will end up finding things that justify it, even if they are small. When do you think your truck will be on the road, I'll race ya:lol: Looking good though, I really like your air box, I used the stock air box and moddified to keep it simple but it sucked. I am having the original 3" hole where the coupler mounted sealed off with fiber glass as we speak. Can't wait to see how this turns out for you:tup:

Yes, at first I was just going to replace the valve guide seals, lifters, pushrods, rockers, timing chain, oil pump. I thought I might need to replace the bearings, so those were added to the list.
Once I got the bottom end opened up, I started thinking about a cam, I also have a set of L35's sitting in the garage as well as some TRW forged pistons.
I didn't want to get bogged down in another rebuild though. It was running quite good with the exception of KR which I'm pretty sure was due to the broken motor mount.
So I made the decision yesterday to go with the original plan with the addition of main studs.
I have ordered everything I need to finish up the motor & get it sealed back up. It should be back together by next weekend. I'll get another block and build it up rather than fart around with this one. I want to start driving it again.

That leaves all of the little things left to do:

1. Replace all of the convoluted wire loom in the engine bay. Some of it is heat damaged, & most of it is to big for the wires it contains, so I can save some space by squeezing it into a smaller i.d. loom. Add additional heat protection to those wires that need it. Re-route wires in the interest of cleanliness. You won't see much by the time I'm done. ;)

2. Replace the fuel return line with braided steel line. Insulate both lines from the body & frame so that don't create unwanted noise.

3. Clean & paint the front of the frame. This may also include removing the inner fenders & sending them out for powdercoating.

4.While the motor & trans are out, undercoat the bottom with second skin audios' Spectrum.

5. Finish up the airbox. I'm going to try to do it in fiberglass. Just need to get the supplies to make the plug & mold.

6. The battery will have to be relocated again thanks to the airbox. I'll probably get a larger battery than the PC680 as it really doesn't have enough reserve capacity for my taste.

7. Replace all ball joints, pitman arm & control arm bushings. I bought new tires & I don't want to ruin them.

I probably won't be done until January. :(

So what are your goals going to be on the PT60? I will primarily be running the same turbo but once I get the hang of the external wg and all the new hardware I will be swapping a bigger turbo for sure.

Too keep it running.
Honestly, I have no goal other than that. I've never been to the track with either truck.

The only time I've been to the track is with my old Cal-Look Bug. And the last time I took it to the track I blew up the transmission on one of the runs.

I'm looking at buying another Bug for my wife & my kids as the get closer to driving age. That thing was a blast. This one will be a sleeper though. ;) No fancy paint or wheels. Just a big motor & better brakes.

His goals are to fix at least one of his trucks so he can drive it instead of polishing it
