Goodbye old & rusted...The Ty gets updated.

Re: Goodbye old & rusted...The Ty gets updated.

Not much done lately. Mostly test fitting everything, spending more money on ARP stainless bolts & figuring out what else needs to be modified after modifying. It's almost an endless circle.

Anyways, I wanted to buy the RPM fan kit (because it's thin), but didn't want to shell out $400 for it. So I reused my Griffin radiator w/ SPAL fans (monster size). There's not much room to work once the water pump is in, but what's new.

After trying to test fit the ATR cold air box back in its' place, I can see it's not going to work with the RPM A/A.
So now I'm working on a slim air filter box that will use the stock rectangular filter & mount in the same location as the ATR box. Time to get some cardboard & start designing.

Wow man...so you're modifying not one but two Sy/Ty trucks at the same time? You are a brave man with very deep pockets, he he. I dropped another $8.5K on 80e conversion today. These trucks eat money like a bad drug or gambling habit. I'd like to think my truck will be "finished" someday, but I doubt that will ever happen. Geesh...

What all does 8.5k get you? How built is it?

I need to get an 4l80e. I'm hoping to get some extra cash soon & I'm torn between the 80e or paying off a credit card. I'll probably pay off the credit card & just keep breaking 700's for awhile longer.

It gets you a bullet-proof electronic race-prepped 80e with everything you need to do the conversion. I just got sick of the 700R4 issues and yeah, it's going on the credit cards. I'm only going to live once, and I want to enjoy this truck before I die. Should be a reliable 10-second truck after all this. We will see...

OK, so I got a bug up my butt about making an airbox.
So a couple of hours & a sheet of foamboard I came up with this partial mockup.
This side goes against the inner fender & I will make a ring to retain the filter against the airbox.

Here you can see the filter & where it sits. It will be completely sealed & when it's time to clean the filter, remove 2 bolts (same 2 bolts that hold overflow reservoir) & the entire box comes out.

Now after this mod I'll have to make another mod to re-relocate the PC680 battery somewhere else.

How do you like your radiator? Did you get the dual 1" core radiator or the dual 1.25" core radiator?
Does it fit good? Does the outlet/inlet link up well with the stock hoses? And does it have the heater core return bung on the passanger side end cap (i hope not)? Sorry for all of the questions, but i need to order one real soon. Looking good by the way, i like how your airbox is coming out:tup: Thanks, Paul Z.

This is one of the best looking airboxes I have seen. It is a really great idea! I can see this in aluminum!

Well it's a monster, 3" core (2 row, 1.5" tubes) & has all of the provisions that the stock radiator has & in the same positions. This was purchased during a GP a loooong time ago.
It's slightly wider than the stock rad.
The assembly with the fans could have been made .5"-1.0" thinner with some trimming and remounting of the fan brackets, but an inch isn't really going to do much for the fit, so I left it alone.

If you don't want the bung you might be able to order it without or cut it off and weld it up.

Thanks.
I'ts got an angle & curve that you can't see around the headlight area to make it fit decent. I've got to figure out how to work that out. With metal that might be difficult, 'cause I'm not a metalworking genius.
I was thinking that (of course I don't know how to do this either) 3/4's of it (the filter plate & sides) could be vacuum formed. And then glue/seal the cover in place.

I don't know, we'll see. Maybe I can simplify the tricky bend & curve section.

I also want to put in a velocity stack so there isn't the sharp transition from inside the flat cover to the tubing that goes to the turbo.
I'm trying to figure out how to make this piece work or find something similar to work with.

Re: Goodbye old & rusted...The Ty gets updated.

After a couple of minutes searching (invention of the web > *) I found this & purchased it.
BPi 3" Flow stack

BTW, on the RPM IC the 2.5" silicone hose from the IC inlet that goes to the turbo IC pipe (bottom hose that faces up), worthless. At least with the PTE60 I installed. When using this straight silicone connector, the aluminum IC pipe from the turbo to this hose places the IC pipe up against the idler arm bolts, wearing a groove in it & eventually maybe a hole.

I bought this 22 deg. elbow that rotates the aluminum IC pipe away from the bolts.

Looking very nice Rick. It's all in the details. That radiator looks huge, shouldn't have any problem cooling!

Thanks Chris.
Are you working this weekend?
Maybe I could stop by for a look-see.

Re: Goodbye old & rusted...The Ty gets updated.

I was sitting looking at the box trying to figure out the funky angle & bend section & the light bulb went on in my head.
Here is what it looks like after I finished it:

I don't think it will be made of metal, unless I cut several pieces & weld them together.
More likely, vacuum formed ABS.

Picked up the fuel rail today from the chrome shop.
Stay tuned for pic's.

Definately better than black.
The guy at the plating shop was worried about doing it since there isn't much flat surface to polish/buff & lots of edges to catch while polishing/buffing. I think that it turned out pretty good.
And yes, it is a Syclone rail. I used it since it was collecting dust, plus it doesn't put as much bend & stress in the braided steel line.

Meh, good for a finishing touch. To bad they aren't more exposed.
