Morgan made it to the S-Series Nats in StL just fine.
2wd only with no front CV axles, just the outer cup and axle shaft to hold the hubs together.
He's been driving it all over StL just like this with no problems, other than spewing diff fluid all over.
Although he now has a 5/16 bolt in one of his rear tires, and someone hit his rear croner cladding with a freakin lawnmower.
Dood earned his broken truck trophy this year!
They should be heading out of StL tomorrow evening providing the other broken NJ truck that is here gets fixed.

well..................I got home around 5:15pm today. The ride home was a long one, taking 25 hours or so since I was following my friend Dave (the truck above) with his slipping transmission and cracked fuel cell. I just kept blocking traffic so he could get a running start down one hill at 80mph so he could make up the next one and try and stay above 55mph. This worked for the entire trip we were together, we split off just as we got into NJ, then he truck decided to just totally crap out on him and he got it trailered home.
I made it home just fine in 2WD and picking up an extra 5 MPG also. the 5/16" bolt in my back tire did just fine and I'll most likely keep it in there for the rest of the summer unless it starts to leak bad. The broken cladding managed to stay on the truck for the ride home however the whole drivers side of my truck has this black tar snot all down the side.
As for my front diff.......yeah well........i called my credit card company and filed a complaint against the payment, they are currently sending me paperwork that I need to fill out and send in if the shop and I cant make some sort of deal. Ive spoke with the shop twice now and e-mailed them pictures of the leaking case and oil soaked chassis, but I havent gotten a reply yet. Either way I will be hopefully getting my money back whether they like it or not.
Ugh, past that im just worn out and tired, but I have to give a BIG thank you to Brian and Jill Dorty for allowing me to use their garage for a few hours, actually Brian did more work on my truck than I did I think and they even let me take a shower before i left Id also like to thank Gabe, Jason, Ted and all those who posted or PMed me offering help.
Well, im gonna go pass out again so maybe I can get something accomplished tomorrow :lol:

Glad you guys made it alright given the situation. If its any consolation I kept an eye out for any sytys sitting along the freeway with a frustrated looking owner/driver standing beside it here in my area.

Well, I got the front diff back out of my truck, as well as the 89 blazer on won on eBay last month.
After I cracked my case open, I was greeted with all sorts of metallic particles in the oil, after only putting about 80 miles on it. There was a good bit of slop in the gears, which means the lash was never properly set, or the bearings were never fully pressed and over those 80 miles, pressed themselves on, thus making everything loose.
The oil leak came from the drivers side of the unit. I couldnt determine if the RTV they used to hold in the cover plate was leaking or if it was the actual seal for the hub itself. Well after having my dad give me a second opinion on it, he noticed the seal itself was not seated evenly so there was no doubt in his mind that it was the cause of the leak.
As far as the metallic particles, well they are steel particles, not aluminum so it narrowed the hunt down as to what to look for. The only thing I could find worn was one of the adjusters which the bearing race sits on, however there are no signs of the race itself spinning, so that must have been from when it went the first time. The only other thing that it could be from is the ring and pinion itself. Since there was a ton of slop in the unit by the time I pulled it, im sure the gears just wore the hell out of themselves through inproper adjustment thus leaving little pieces of steel in the oil.
Ive been documenting all my work for both the guy at the shop as well as my credit card company, so when I get them uploaded this evening, Ill post them up.
Oh yeah, and as far as those retainers, even one of them on the blazer diff was bent and looked like it was on its way out, so I think im going to fabricate some newer heavy duty ones if anyone is interested since you cant get them from GM without spending $200.

here is the "repair" they did on the retainers. Not really a bad idea, however one already shows signs of breaking.
signs of wear around this seal, however the part thats worn is part of the cover itself and could have happened the first time it went out. Either way its not critical, just something I took a note of.

this is the adjuster for the left side of the diff., the "upper" part of it shows signs of "spinning" or wear from the race, however I have to assume it was from the first failure since the race I pulled out still looks fine.
Lots on incorrect wear showing on the ring gear. Im most likely gonna swap both gears with those from the blazer.
This is the outer seal for the left side hub. Laying a ruler flat acoss the cover, you can see the seal is about 1/16" lower on the left side (which is actually the bottom when installed) than it is on the right side. This is most definately the cause of the leak.
about to call the shop in a few mins, see what they wanna try and do about it, but at least i got the paperwork from the CC company today
