first datamaster scan

I have the truck running and all back together with the new engine, I took it for a little drive up to the parts store to get new bulbs. I am going to make an aldl cable tomorrow so I can run some scans on datamaster. I have never done it before so I am not sure what to do. I can figure out the interface, I have seen how to's on that, but what should I do with the truck to get useful info. Just drive down the road or something else I should do. Forgive my noobness, I am just trying to be very cautious so I dont blow this engine up.

Oh and its an all stock truck besides a cone filter.

Is the engine still using stock components, or did you change things (bigger injectors, different turbo, different cam, etc.)?
Are you running the stock chip, or an aftermarket?
If you have changed components you will want to go very easy on it till you get DM hooked up and get some logs.

With the key on, push your throttle all the way to the floor and see if you get 100% TPS. If so, I would start it and let it idle for 30 seconds in park or neutral, then for another 30 in gear. Then, go for a drive without getting into boost... just cruise around and see how it feels. Take it out where you can cruise for a few minutes at 55, 60, 65mph. Come back and repeat the idle routine. Take that log back and sit down and review it for lean spots, coolant temps, voltage levels. If it feels good, and the log looks good, you can push it just a bit further and get into a bit of boost. Review that log for similar issues.... just keep adding a bit more throttle each time making sure to check that all your parameters are looking OK.

Stock everything, stock spec rebuild on the engine, stock turbo and chip, the only thing not stock is the air filter and the exhaust.

Re: first datamaster scan

cat is in and has what appears to be a nice system installed. has a turbo style muffler looks to be 2.5" pipe all welded. i will snap a pic when i get home

Well, if everything is the same I'd just watch your temps and oil pressure. You can use DM to make sure your wastegate and WG solenoid are working the way they should. Keep your ears open for unusual noises and turn it off and locate if you do hear any... sounds like you're on your way to having it back on the road :D

I took it for a little drive tonight it feels really good, I never drove it before since I bought it broken, the only noises I here are the ic pump and lower ic fan, the injectors ticking, and one other. Like I said I am trying being careful with it to make sure it is all up to par prior to getting on it at all the most boost it has seen is maybe halfway on stock gauge, I can here the turbo spool and it sounds smooth, but when the boost goes up to about halfway on the stock gauge(currently installing the autometer) and I let off, I here a rattling noise, it doesn't do it every time and never when boost is low on the gauge. The turbo had no play in the shaft at all so I feel confident its not the turbo, I am thinking that it is the intake crossover tube rattling against the fan shroud since there is nothing that secures it as of now. Since it has a cone filter the air-box isn't on the other end to hold it, or at least I am assuming that is what held it in stock configuration. I am going to the depot tomorrow to get the brass fitting I need to finish the boost gauge install, and was going to look for some sort of straps to secure it in place. I thought I could just tape it down then drive it again to see if it still does it also.

Not to insult you, but are you sure it's not just the sound of the intake charge being forced back through the turbo when you close the throttle? It's certainly more noticeable with a cone filter instead of a stock airbox. As far as I know, and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but the airbox is standard S-series stuff.

Could very well be, this is the first time I have ever ridden in a syty vehicle. That makes me feel better though, that sounds like a very reasonable explanation. And dont worry about my feelings, they are submarine hardened:rotf:
