Re: exact location of rear decals? 92 ty?
Is it confirmed that ALL 92s were stock half way across the tailgate? Maybe PAS fired the drunk ass who thought that placement was good half way through production?
Some of us have been around SyTy for 15+ years or more, attended Nats KC in 98-99 when there were ~100 trucks attending, (many of which when only 6-7 years old still had their born-with paint and decals in the PAS-placed position) and have an incredible penchant for remembering trivial detail. One of my quirks that well-suites me to being an NCRS Judge. While I can't say I've ever specifically checked known-original 92 placement with a production number, I CAN say I've never seen a 92 with 93-spacing
that I felt was born-with placement.
YES! The "correct" 92 position is "half way across the tailgate". I've measured it, have it somewhere, or have seen it published, but can't find it now. The dimension to the "T" is about 4.5-5".
Interesting. For fun, I got out my OEM '92 Ty decal just to see where they would have gotten the alignment marks.
On the bottom of the decal, it has the text:
LOCATE TO FEATURE LINE
& LEFT EDGE OF TAILGATE
Drawing a straight line up from that mark the T is 1" in. I wonder if this is where the '93s are?
Take a look at that decal again. Look at the date on it. I can see month "3", but not the year. I'll bet the year is much later than the last Typhoon produced.
Alright. THIS is where the confusion comes from.
The 93 position changed to the 1" spacing. The Avery backing was changed to reflect this spacing, and I believe
even the grey 92 replacement Avery 92 "OEM" decals were printed on the 93-spacing backing.
I looked at the NOS grey 92 decal I have in my stash, purchased from GM in 2001. There's a date on it. "1997". I'll be damned. That is NOT a decal on a backing that could have been used in 1991 when my 92's were built. So My guess that the backing was changed for both colors to the 93 spacing is a damn good guess.
I believe THIS is how all the 92's with 93 spacing have come to be. Over the years, the replacement decals with 93 spacing have been applied without anyone being the wiser, or giving a shit even if they do know it's wrong. The decal on my red/gry is in the 93 position. I knew it was wrong, didn't have the measurements handy, and didn't really give a shit, so I used the backing spacing and put them on "in the wrong place".
92 = "half way across the tailgate"
93 = 1" to the "T"
