Re: Engine flatlines/jumps

took it to a test n tune 1/8th mile. best of 8.3, consistant 8.7s.

It misfires so bad at 5k sounds like to motors going to explode. Solid boost control, solid fueling, solid timing.

At the end of my rope with this project. 3 years, i've tested everything, and its still junk.

OK, time for an LSx install!

I'll send you an email tomorrow and we can talk about it and maybe pinpoint something.

Re: Engine flatlines/jumps

a ray of hope. At Homecoming i pulled out the chip, and put in my emulator and reloaded the current BIN. Success. For whatever reason, the same BIN on a chip caused the truck to go into seizures, and in the emulator it runs like a dream.

I have about 8 chips that i burn/reburn BINs onto with a flashburner. So either the chips are worn out, or theres something in the flashburner. Further testing will show what the problem was.

But bottom line, it'll run good now. I hope. Fuel pumps started whining louder today, so i think i might have lost one of the pumps.

That's good news... it will be good to find out what happened with the chip. I actually had a chip go bad a few months ago (after about 100 burns). Craig, over at Moates, said it's a real rarity for that to happen, but...
I always 'blank' the chip before I burn a new BIN, then 'verify' the BIN after burning.

I really hope you get it straight. After hearing it in front of the hotel at HC when you passed by, it's a definite improvement.

same here, i erase each one, and blank check it before i reburn it. I'm gonna get some new chips and see if it is in fact the used chips, or the flashburner, or something else. I got away from the emulator about 2 years ago, cause the battery kept dying in it.

An idea was also thought of that for whatever reason, then extra cable length of the emulator cable provided extra isolation and distance from the ignition components on the engine. Which might have cause electrical noise through the chip right at a certain rpm. This is yet to be tested.

Re: Engine flatlines/jumps

went out for a drive and the problem's still here.

i did a datalog. and compared with one from a couple years ago. The MAP valves vs. Boost values dont match between the 2 logs. The ECM voltage doesnt match. And the TPS voltage doesnt match. So i have low ECM voltage. And finally i'm going to hotwire it. The datalog showed 12.4v under WOT. The old log showed 13.1v. The current log shows 250kpa as being 20psi. And the old log shows 250kpa as 23psi. I also noticed the TPS voltage falls if i hold WOT (at speed). when i first hit 100% tps, it was 3.86v, and as i held it it dropped to 3.3v (under boost, at speed)

The MPH hung solid at 110mph for 2-3 seconds and would not climb any higher (5100rpms). Torque converter was locked solid. The engine held at 5100 for the 2-3 seconds, then it misfired and spiked knock.

Brand new MSD wires and NGK plugs, as of last week.

just lost the 2nd Walbro. The first one died about 2 weeks ago. They lasted a little over 1 year.

Truck is down again.

you sure they weren't the cheap Chinese knockoffs? Mines been in there for over 5 years.

Re: Engine flatlines/jumps

no they arent the knockoffs.

i hotwired the ECM yesterday. the hotwire didnt seem to improve the ECM voltage. its still 13.6v at idle, up from 13.4v like it was before. At WOT before i got 12.7v, now its 13.2v, a little improvement, but not like i had hoped.

and now it randomly drops the fuel pump. I was out driving, and all of a sudden the truck went lean and the motor died. I went to restart it, and the fuel pump wouldnt come on. So i let it sit for 20 minutes on the side of the road. Each time i tried to refire it the fuel pressure read 0. Finally i tried it and i heard the fuel pump come on, it firedup and i limped it home. Now the pumps wont prime anymore. I have 0 fuel pressure. Filter is good.

I'm gonna pull the relay on the racetronix harness and see if i'm getting a signal from the SyTy harness.

Re: Engine flatlines/jumps

I'm the luckiest guy in the world *sarcasm*

So the truck doesnt start. The fuel pumps weren't priming the system. So i checked the battery and alternator, both have good power. Checked the racetronix harness, its getting good power, but no signal.

So i go straight to the ECM that i just hotwired. Checked the hotwire relay. Good ground, good signal in and out, but no power source. So i pulled the power "hotwire" out of the truck. It was burnt. Lucky me, when i reinstalled the passenger side kickpanel, the hotwire got caught and sandwiched next to the courtesy light. Which burnt and shorted the wire. Causing the truck to not run.

So i reran a new hotwire, and everything seems ok, for now. More driving tomorrow may show new problems. I'm eager with anticipation of breaking something else.

Stay tuned, same bat time, same bat channel.

Re: Engine flatlines/jumps

alright, let me lay down todays activities.

the truck has been "ECM relay hotwired modded" for a couple days, and two 5 minute drives. i'm getting no voltage improvement at idle (13.5v), and a half volt improvement at WOT (13.2v).

Went to the gas station today ran fine, went to restart the truck and it started rough. The ECM was dead. Checked the hotwire fuse, still good, checked my ECM1 and ECMB fuses, they were good. The ALDL had no output. So i limped it home on 0deg timing.

Got it home and verified the ECM is getting power. The fuel pumps run so it might not be completely dead. I jumpered the ALDL, and the "Check Engine" light did not flash at all. I reloaded my BIN to the ostrich, and it verified it accepted. But it still ran horrible, so the ECM isnt sending anything to the engine. Tried my old ECM that stop working awhile ago. It ran worse, i jumpered the ALDL and the "Check Engine" light stayed solid on the old ECM.

So to recap, i have good power everywhere, good grounds, but neither ECM will communicate with the engine.

Now i'm off to buy yet another ECM, without knowing what killed this one.

any ideas?

Re: Engine flatlines/jumps

Did you buy it from autozone by chance? if so they will swap it under warrenty.

Re: Engine flatlines/jumps

Any chance you have a bad rectifier in the alternator? AC ripple and ECMs don't get along.

Also, do you have an optima battery by any chance?
