OK, talked to the boss very briefly about cutting a couple of these to sell and he didn't seem opposed to the idea. However, he said that we would have to talk about it some more come Monday since he had a meeting to attend this evening.

This isn't going to delay the machining of the billet valve covers is it?

Holly $hit Josh is still alive. Sorry Mike, this is a thread hijack. Josh, haven't heard or seen you in ages. Josh is one of the OG's from way back.

No it won't because they will be cut on a different machine (fully automated) when the time comes.

More than likely, I will surface the top of them so I won't have to machine a pair or sine plates to mount them to. Depending on how "radical" I get with my design, machine time will probably be on the order of a day (24 hours) total to make a pair. Load up the tools on a Friday at the end of the day, hit the "GO" button on the way out the door and let the part(s) cut all weekend long. Material cost alone will be more than a pair of sheet metal covers cost before I even chuck up a tool in the spindle. Material plus design time and machine time will put that project in the neighborhood of a few thousand dollars easy if I was paying for it. Needless to say, I will only make maybe two pairs at best when it happens...

Life's good, GTO is a good "family car".

Nice to see some old timers like Mr. TC non-lockup converter from NY and the candian with the beautiful garage floor in florida are still around.

Re: EGR block off plate project

Ok the verdict is in, had to wait and see how this month's production schedule was going to look. I will be able to sell these block off plates for $40 SHIPPED. I use priority mail with a flat rate of $4.05. Therefore, you will be able to purchase my plate for roughly $11 more (minus shipping) than the most expensive one that Black Knight mentioned on the previous page.

I like the sharp edge but, I can cut a radius around the perimeter free of charge it that is desired. I can also cut it ovesized so that it can be sanded to blend into the intake like mine if you are going for the buffed look. I don't anticipate a ton of people wanting these so, I will fabricate them as machine time becomes available. I can't cut into scheduled production time just to make two or three plates. However, there should be no problem getting them cut within a few days of getting payment. I will accept payment via Paypal or money order.

Please send any correspondence to me at syclone2932@gmail.com . That way, I will be sure to get it...

Re: EGR block off plate project

Black Knight, I cut your plate last night and received your payment so your plate is getting mailed out this morning. I will wrap the stainess steel screws separately so that they don't scratch the plate in shipping. You will get a plate and the hardware to mount it so don't pitch the box unless you have both ;). Be sure to use a little anti seize on the bolts so that you can get them back out if you even want to remove the plate for whatever reason... THANKS and happy holidays :cmas:!

Re: EGR block off plate project

You can start it here. Do you desire a radiused (rounded) edge around the perimeter or do you just want it left as a sharp edge? All the pics that I have posted so far are with the sharp edge.

Working in a machine shop, you get very familiar with a dial indicator:

The average piece of paper or a hair on your head is .003" thick. Each graduation on a dial indicator is .0005" or one sixth the thickness of a piece of paper or a hair. Every plate gets decked on both sides with a 4 inch carbide face mill to true the surface up. Running the indicator across the surface tells you how flat it is.

Thanks for the compliment but, I am FAR from being a cnc genius. Making molds all day, you learn quite a bit about fit and finish. Take one good look at the upper intake where the EGR bolts and ask yourself "could I recreate that shape with only eight pieces of geometry?". Of course you couldn't but, that's what you are getting 99.95% of the time. It's three arcs and fives lines total and there isn't even a draft cut on the edge to match the intake. The area down by the EGR passage is a real train wreck and that's where I had to most trouble since it's makes all kinds of weird turns down there.

AZtyphoon, you can Paypal me at syclone2932@gmail.com I see no problem with getting it cut and shipped before the weekend. Either way, I will keep you posted. That holds true for all the other folks that emailed me as well ;).

Re: EGR block off plate project

I got the plates decked and drilled after work today. Only thing left to do now is countersink the plates, mount up spoilplate in the vice, indicate it in and run the program. Right now, we are under the gun to get several projects completed before the holidays :(. The going is slow since I am cutting these one at a time. If I have to, I will make a trip into work over the weekend to finish them if necessary...
