went to borders today and saw a book about the first 100 years of GMC.
naturally i went to the 90's section and looked for the syty's. i found 1 pic of a syclone and it said that the truck was a mid year entry in januaray of 91 for the 91 model year and there were only 632 of them made that year. it also said that the engine was mated to a different trans but i cant remember which it was. the book had a few senteces about the ty's and nothing about the sogt. gmc must be ashamed that they built these trucks.

They used to have the Syclone & Typhoon listed in the "history" section on GMC's official site. Can't find it anymore...even tried using their search engine. nada. I wonder why they changed it? Or, am I looking in the wrong area?

Gentlmen, we and our Turbo Buick brothers have been abandoned. While the Blue Oval SVT boys have been doing a wonderful job of revamping their performance line. Look at 'em...the Lightning, the next Mustang, and their next supercar, a reissue of the Le Mans ass-kicker GT 40. GM has very much given up pursuit of factory muscle, or at least above average ones. The Impala SS, 454 SS, and the wanna-be eXtreme's all fell short of the mark we and the T-Types had. With the demise of the once great Camero, what are we left with? A Corvette. Which has trouble holding it's own against the much more recent addition, Dodge's Viper. Not to down our flagship, but not until the French Team Oreca dropped their Vipers, did the 'Vette win the GTS class at Le Mans. I know, I was there on leave while stationed in Germany. I wanted to see Earnhart drive the C5R, unfortunatly he passed away not long before. What will it take for GM to return to this market? I have no idea, but we should watch the Oval's SVTeam. Though they may be the enemy, they ARE making factory muscle and making a profit diong it. By the way, the next Mustang just may have a supercharger.

...Ahem...

Being a fox-body owner until recently I agree that SVT is doing a much better job of holding on to the tradition of performance and muscule than Chevy, but it ain't all rosy out there...

I feel that SVT has become "weak". They are starting to make cookie cutter cars with a "upper-white middle class" appeal. They are NOT building cars for a true muscle car lover. Or even your average street enthusiast. They are building "boulevard crusin'" cars. Cars that try too hard to look "COOL" but have no soul or character. The 2005 Mustang is a joke. It is a clever but overall flawed desing. The "retro" look is a fad. And as soon as people get over it, the Mustang will dissapear just like the Camaro has. $40,000 FORD...??? I don't think so...:fist:

I'll take an "old-school" 80's muscle car over a new Cobra any day...

I have a book on the history of Detroit cars ( 1950's to late 90's), it has alot of facts wrong about the cars. Syclone is not pictured, but they have a "Chevy" Typhoon pictured. It has what looks like the gray plastic 93 Chevy s-10 grill and vette center caps on the wheels.

Think harder, Matt. $40K for a Mustang made to directly threaten a 'Vette. With the Camero dead, who is their next target? Make no mistake it IS the 'Vette as well as the Viper. Hence the larger price tag.
As far as "weak","upper-white middle class","boulevard crusin' cars", "that try too hard to look "COOL" but have no soul or character.". The original Thunderbolt Grease-slapper GT-40, has enough soul and sharacter to fill the beds of our trucks.
Wanna see it? "http://www.fordvehicles.com/fordg...R rivals, and where GM has failed us.[/quote]

My absolute apologies to The T-Types, all of 'em. Produced in the 80's and I forgot them. I too, wanted one very badly back then, but my paychecks then just couldn't afford one. Still love to see our older brothers out there.

I just bought a book called "Muscle Cars" (creative name, i know). I picked it up just because it had my Chevelle in it. I didn't even think about looking for syty's. Got home and sure as $hit it has both of them in there. Can't remember exactly what it said, just that all the info was correct (AWD 4.3 Turbo, 2995 sy's made, less than 5,000 ty's made, etc...) Good book in general, had picture of red '72 (?) GTO on front cover.

You mean you aren't impressed by the SSR or the Silverado AssAss???

GM has turned into the laughing stock of performance.
If it looks good it must be fast, right?

I am keeping my Ty and right now its the only GM we own.
Not saying our other vehicles don't have problems but GM doesn't make much I'd even drive anymore.
And I will never even think about driving a fuckin fard.

Yeah I think they want to keep are trucks hush. It would be hard to sell or explain why they cant beat are 10 year old performance.

While having less known about these trucks may be advantagous to some, i.e., Race sharking, buying and selling prices, etc...It's not exactly helping us find variety in parts. Relying on a few specialized shops for the more extreme upgrades, and it shouldn't be long before we start running out of OEM cladding. (BTW, anybody know if fiberglass is available?)

Cav, I'm not going to argue with you because what it comes down to is a matter of personal opinion, but just ask any a true hardcore Blue Oval fan. I think you'll be suprised.

As for the..."still trying to remember what 80's muscle car was''...You mentioned them. Although forgot to mention the GN...which you should be shot for...:) Don't act like we have SOOOO much more to choose from nowadays. Because we don't... If anything, it's just more variances of the same crap.

P.S. "The original Thunderbolt Grease-slapper GT-40, has enough soul and sharacter to fill the beds of our trucks..." ...It also has a price tag big enough to empty it...

Well put, Matt, as I intended no argument.
"If anything, it's just more variances of the same crap." Is my point exactly.
While GM churns out average Malibu's, Cavlier's and Monte Carlo's...the Oval's making the new 'Stang, Thunderbird, and hyperpriced Gt-40. Thier SVTeam has reworked the Lightning, Focus, and current 'Stang. In as much as trucks are concerned, even Dodge is killing GM. I see the small Peterbuilt's they make damn near everywhere. And then there's the Avalanche...

BTW, I did correct myself
My absolute apologies to The T-Types, all of 'em.
I meant GN's, GNX's, as wellas T-types.

I postd the same argument on another topic. The Siverado SS hardly stands up to the L in performance. But as a die-hard GM guy it is a nice truck overall. Also I've read interviews with GM officials and the goal of the SS was not to compete with the L. This is why it is offered in X-tended cab only, and has a 10,000lbs tow rating. If you compare performance #'s of new stangs to the last F-bodies the stangs are still lagging behind. Granted it won't take long for them to catch up but hopefully GM will remove their heads from their ass and produce some good-old "muscle cars." You also compared a Vette to a viper. Yeah they are both flagship cars but not exactly apples for apples. You talking about a 5.7 pushrod V-8 405hp vs a 505 ci V-10 with 500hp. Performance #'s are only 1-2 tenths of a second apart, and personally for the what, 30,000 grand less I'll take the 1-2 tenth slower Vette anyday. I'm not defending GM but look at their past and what the have brought to the table. There is no other auto manufacturer that can claim they have acomplished what GM has. 50 years for the Vette, unfortunetly only 35 for the F-body and the trucks speak for themselves.(I think so anyway)So yeah I agree with you that GM better get motivated here but I'm proud to say I'm a die-hard fan. ::thumbsup:: ::thumbsup::
