Re: Back in the Typhoon Game.

I wonder if your friend will regret getting the new car.

Only in that the "free maintenance" he's received for the past 14 years is not going to be available on the new car. He only paid for parts, and it never really needed much over the years. It cost him $35 for a power window motor. My guess is a window motor in a Cayenne is well over $1,000 at a Porsche Stealer. It seems to go pretty good. It rides better, and is mucho quieter inside, which is something you become much more aware of as you age. a Cayenne is probably a reasonable step UP from a Typhoon.

We talked about the maintenance issues. The Cayenne has a "Certified Used Car" Certification that is backed by Porsche. It covers everything (non-routine maintenance) for two years. If the car turns out to be a POS, he can sell it and try something else. We'll see. He's not hard on cars. The Cayenne will be fine for his purposes. And it's white. He really wanted to stay with a white car. That was a huge part of his decision to do the Cayenne. He found a white one. Around SoCal 75% of Cayennes are black or silver.

Re: Back in the Typhoon Game.

Never realized you regretted selling the 92 Ty that much????

Good Luck looks like a nice ride!!!!!!

I will tell you that I've enjoyed driving your old Ty and has been very reliable, other than the debacle I went thru with it when I first bought it that was MY fault...........

Pic I took of it last winter, not trying to rub it in:D

That looks great! Congrats! Do you remember the paint code used for the grey? Need to repaint mine but hear from the factory the actual color varried.

The cladding on both of the Tys in the pics below were painted by myself. Use the front bumper of the 93 for comparison to the 92 pic. The 92 red/gry was done in 2000, and the 93 wht/gry was 2001. The formula used was WA8798, GM code 90/BYB. There is a WA code for a low-gloss single stage which was the actual PAS applied color, PPG #35552, but that formula is NLA.

The clear coat on each Ty is slightly different. The 92 is less glossy, and to me, looks closer to the PAS-applied finish. The 93 has higher gloss. I use PPG products, and mix 2021 Concept clear with 2061 Flex-n-Flat to achieve the gloss I'm after. The 92 was painted piece-by piece. There are discernible differences in gloss on adjacent pieces. The 93 was laid out on a long table like they would be installed on the car. I made my gun passes along the entire 'length' of each side. There is no difference in gloss between pieces.

So, there's some highlights about painting cladding. Not to mention how much ROOM all those pieces take up when they're not on the car.

PS: Thanks for the recent pic John. You're taking good care of it.

Nice Dave! You have quite the SyTy collection these days.

Re: Back in the Typhoon Game.

Whatever came of your old Ty. Damn that was a nice truck! No doubt you will have this new one just as reliable.

Re: Back in the Typhoon Game.

I've begun to get this back on the road. After the sale of DesertSy earlier this year, I've been suffering boost-withdrawal. Having been in storage for exactly 4 years, I'm surprised by how well this old turd drives and runs. I'm enjoying it again.

The main hurdle at present is it failed the Room of Doom 3 years ago. Not by much, but it did. A client of mine told me he got his 540i to pass by using a CRC product called Guaranteed to Pass. While the cats on his Bimmer cost $1,500, and mine is maybe $150, I thought it worth a try as its a lot less hassle to pour a can of $12 shit in the tank than replace the cat. I've been driving it every night to use up the tank of gas with the additive. Once that is gone, the instructions say to refill the tank, drive it a few miles, then take it in for testing.

I'm hoping that this and new plugs (I can attest that 48,000 miles is too far, they were pretty worn) will get it legal.

Good luck. Smog checks were never fun. Annual inspections are sooo much less stressful (even though they include a smog check...but if HAS to be more lenient than CA)

Welcome "back".

I used to see a white/gray on occasion when I lived near Calabasas. Since then, I associate the color with California.

Heh. And now I have one!

Re: Back in the Typhoon Game.

After always being a cynic of snake oil type products, a couple of years ago, I used a product called cataclean for the first time on a non syty vehicle that had borderline emissions levels. It worked and just by the smell of the tail pipe, I could tell the efficiency of the 20 year old cat had increased.
This year after struggling every year to pass emissions with my ty, I used some on that. It had been stood for two years and still passed easier than it ever had before. The product you used may well be a similar product. I believe cataclean is now sold in the US under the Mr Gasket brand. Apart from lubeguard in the trans, and previously 'other' occasional fuel system cleaners I dont tend to go for additives.
I am sold on cataclean though. It works for me. Good luck with yours, I hope it passes.

Curious on this cataclean and what DaveP is going to use if you will see a performance improvement. I have heard that a clogged cat will kill your power. We don't have smog checks here in Oregon, "yet", but I have a 2000 Silverado with 200k + miles with the original cat and it seems to be a dog lately. I would just remove it if I could emulate the downstream O2 to fool the computer.

Re: Back in the Typhoon Game.

My Typhoon failed 3 times here in Arizona. I got the tank down to 1/2 and added a quart of denatured alcohol. I drove it hard and boost launched and got it hot. Blew zeros.

Re: Back in the Typhoon Game.

Update on Room of Doom:

I drove a full tank of treated fuel through it, then added a couple gallons and took it in yesterday. The guy I use and I have a 10 year working relationship. He does all my cars, and knows I know what I'm doing and am not trying to pull any shenanigans. We put it on the machine in manual Mode and I thought it was broken. Like 8 for HC, and zero for CO. He ran the test, and it failed. WTF. The State computer just runs a program, it doesn't tell what's wrong. The readings were great, but the program failed it. My guy used a "trick" and passed it anyway. The readings at 2500 were .01 CO and 25ppm HC. Well within limits. So I don't get it.

Anyway, I'm legal. There are some other issues, mostly cosmetic (it desperately needs the paint to be rubbed out) but I have a boosted errand car back. Coolness.

Glad it finally passed. After mine passed I got insurance thru Hagerty and have not had to do emissions tests in 3 years. I despise the room of doom.

Heck ya!! Wonder what was up with the machine though?? So you think this fuel additive stuff did the trick or was it the new plugs you threw in??
