prime gears, or waller.

or get a local guy to build one for you, but dont expect it to live forever behind these trucks.

Re: any living 700r4

There are many livable 700s out there. Depends how they are built and how you take care of them. I run my 700 hard with a very built motor and have only snaped the rear shaft out of it. I have never busted the internals or brunt up any clutches. I have had this trns in my truck from new and have put three different stages builds into it. I did them as an upgreade each time I did a mojor modification to the motor. I didn't wait until it broke.

I did a Hartman Stage 4 back when I was running 12's then upgraded to hartman's Stage 7 which was his allout build about 5years ago. When the output shaft snaped a couple years ago i put in one the the billet shafts that Nolan or someone was selling on the board and a couple of upgrades and never had a problem since.

A couple of things

I do have a quality cast aluminum pan.
I do have a good cooler.
I do run a trans fliter.
I do change oil every year.
I do run a high grade oil. (Red Line Racing )
I do run a trans temp guage.

I DO NOT EVER down shift manually under load.
I DO NOT EVER lock up the TC until the top of third when racing (WOT)
I DO NOT EVER race using Over Drive (WOT)
I DO NOT EVER make back to back rus until the trans is back down to 160 -170 temps.

700r4's get a lot of greif, but they can and do take a lot of punishment if treated correctly and built correctly. As with anything that may be underbuilt for it's a[pplication, you need to understand it and use it accordingly. If you want to impress your friends by dropping a down a gear and nailing the gas then you will be abusing a 700r4. You are abusing a 4l80e, also but it can take it longer.

Where are you located? I'm about to post my freshly built tranny for sale. It can handle 11's.

Re: any living 700r4

Im sure mine was 12 second capable and it was built by a local guy for $1200. He specialized in performance trannies though. It held up for 1000-1200 miles till the engine went then I sold it but Im sure it would have lasted much longer if treated correctly. I sold it to someone on here, maybe they could tell you how its doing.

In my Syclone it was a stock trans with 70K miles, stock engine with basic work done. It held up to 1.7 60' times plus abuse on the street without a problem. Just dont get them hot. My stock typhoon(which had 100 and something thousand on it) one went after about 5 boost launches right in a row. It acted up for a few weeks then went back to normal but I went ahead and had it rebuilt anyways.

Yeah I would agree you can run your 700 into the 12's but eventually, it will break. A lot of people here dont drive their trucks everyday. I usually get about 2 years out of my 700's before I have to build it again and I seriously abuse mine, BAD. So it is possible. Especially if you drive it everyday but dont abuse it constantly.

700's can take the abuse. Jamie just ran one of my 5yr old build's 9.89 and had over 150 passes on it. and many many thousands of hard street miles.

Re: any living 700r4

My truck has ran mid 12's all day with stock turbo and motor in front of a Prime Gears (George Blake) build for over three years now. If you don't go through one of the vendors for a rebuild, it's going to be a crap shoot. Some have had good luck and others don't get to drive it long enough to change the oil... I fell for the local "cheap" rebuild on my second transmission and I didn't even get 100 miles out if it before it had to come back out. Total waste of time and money.

Had mine built at CRT transmissions in Clearwater florida, they did a awesome job. Ran 11's on it for over a year with no problems. Did take some considerations like Winded stated with the good cooler/oil, and leting it cool between runs. Going to run 10's on it this summer and install the extra deep pan. See how it holds up.

Ok Here is what you want to do.

My Trans has run for 2 years Mid to Low 11"s and hopefully Tues it will be a living 10 sec truck trans.

Mine was rebuilt by a AAmco Guy who is into fast cars and trucks. They will need to take and replace planetaries with the newer version 5 gear instead of 4 gear. That what was constantly breaking on my truck and now only issue we have had is the bands, but new Kevlar heavy duty grade. When they pulled it apart after 2 years the clutch packs looked brand new. The band and drum was bit distorted but Aamco Warranty covered that for replacement. Alot of better parts and stronger from the newer versions 4L60 & 65.

My next step would be a 4L80E but i would need to break this one 1st.

Cost will be 1800-2200 from a good builder.

Re: any living 700r4

Something I want to add to this thread is that there is an issue with ALL transmissions when heating up the tires doing burnouts. If you are doing your burnout, and you let it make it to 2nd gear AND you let completely off the throttle you WILL let the tires GRAB HARD. This has been known to break cases, sprags, and output shafts in 700s, TH400's AND 4L80e's. It's basically like a big neutral drop and the parts will NOT take that kind of abuse very long.
Frank from Autoaddictions is very good at it. Watch some of his vids. Your better off doing a long John Forrest burnout and letting it off easy than dropping the throttle shut and beating the crap out of the drivetrain.
This is not a shortcoming of either trans. This is basic necessity that as a driver you will have to learn to do correctly.

Now THATS a good point to make...thanks G'. ;)

My 93K mile tranny has started to slip under a moderate to heavy throttle under boost. It over-revs until I modulate the throttle as if to let the TC catch a break.
Phil and I made an adjustment to the TV cable and it DID make it shift harder in low RPMs.....but still does the above.
Strangely though......today, it seemed to behave somewhat better for some odd reason ??? :dunno: :dunno: WTF ??

Do a fluid flush and put DexIII and lubegard in it. Your clutches have glazed. It may be too late but this may help give it some more time.

Great, thanks George. That answered my next question of which....could the improved new behavior be a sign of glazed clutch packs.I'll definatly try the suggestions you mentioned.
If I am indeed "too late".......would I be looking at any other internal damages to fix/replace ??
Sounds like it would be a full rebuild....clutches,valve rebuilds,,,,,what else.??
cheers,Vinny

Clutches and seals. You can upgrade hard parts if you need to/want to but as long as you treat it the same then just clutches and seals and bearings and replace bushings and hard parts if worn/damaged. I have a build I do that's $1850. Updated reinforced sprag, reinforced cryo'd input drum etc. That's the one I like to do for sytys.

Ok, thanks. Man...I guess I just don't make enough cash working in R&D as some of you gents do. I guess taking care of my elderly parents dips into my loose funds more than I thought. Nearly 2k for a trans build is impossible for my budget currently....so I'll have to go with a used or stock minimum rebuild locally. That sucks .
Oh well, as we often say..."gotta love these trucks",lol.

Stage III...sounds like a Hartman setup. Make sure it works and isn't just a "parts" tranny.
