Aluminum Bowtie vs Stock block

Since I can't find an Iron bowtie block anymore was leaning towards an aluminum bowtie block. Can anyone tell me weither or not a fully prepped RPM stock block with splayed billett main caps would be stronger/handle more power than an Aluminum Bowtie block.

Thanks for the advise

Save A ton of cash and make more power. go to A V8. Will hold up alot better for you also.

If your going to make the power to require a bowtie block your going to need a crank stronger then the stocker as well. Now your talking $5k just for the block and crank, nothing else.

Not putting down rpm at all. But check out Campbell's latest builds.

if i would do it all again (and im not even done), id do a v8. prob standard 383FI single turbo. more power, and prob less money.

How much power would a alum bowtie block cryo treated and filled with a nitrated crank be good for?

there are guys out there that are pobalay making 700 or so hp with aluminum blocks. they were only rated for 500-600hp from gm IIRC.

Alum. Block it just for A weight savings, that all, no stronger then A cast iron block.

Re: Aluminum Bowtie vs Stock block

Sticking a V8 in my Sy is not even an option...I won't waste a Sy that way, as far as the Crank and Rods I am either going with Crower or Bryant crank and rods. I just want a strong block to go with the strong Billet crank and Rods...I have a hard time throwing 4500 dollars worth of crank and rods in my stock block with all splayed billet main caps. Basically I want the best block I can get since I'm droping serious $$ on this. The stock motor ran great right until I decided to tear it apart to make more HP, I've got custom RPM headers to use with my Brodix heads and I only run race gas in it...Like I said before only want the best block that I can get to round out the whole combination.

Thanks for the replies

If that's the case, I'd keep my eyes and ears open and wait for an iron bowtie to come up for sale from a private party. I wouldn't be suprised if a couple of ppl on here have a few stashed away.

Re: Aluminum Bowtie vs Stock block

You never said how much power your looking to make though.. Your just comparing blocks, and of course the bowtie stuff is going to be stronger just by comparison. You cant exactly look at this as your only going to spend $4500 and be done. I'll bet if you go full bowtie that by the end of the build when the motors ready to fire up you'll have around $15k just into the motor.

I looked into a bowtie block at one point too because I'm planning on making 650ish. But I've seen really good things from stock blocks and stock cranks. AND, I know the machine shop that's doing the work on my parts. And being able to see some of the work the shop has done I know what I'm getting.

But if your only looking to make 500hp, why spend way to much money when a good build stock block and stock crank will do just fine. If you've got the money to burn then I'd go bowtie.

if you have a question about a RPM motor I suggest you speak with rpm.

I have been running an alum block for years and it's held up just fine.

Re: Aluminum Bowtie vs Stock block

It's hard to believe a alum siamese bore block isn't stronger than a stock cast iron block. I was told the selves move in a stock block under high boost that's why you can't push the stock block.

Re: Aluminum Bowtie vs Stock block

are you talking about boost or hp? people have run 700 up on a stock block, ofcourse that's over the egde. people have run 700hp on a allu bowtie, which is over the edge es well.

Re: Aluminum Bowtie vs Stock block

There are two different alumimum blocks. One can withstand just about anything to toss at it. A few of those are still available through GM i believe.

The other is no very strong and a waste of money IMHO. Those are sold out though.

Re: Aluminum Bowtie vs Stock block

Bowtie should be bowtie. Billet crank, bowtie block, billet rods, aluminum heads.

Stock block should have a stock crank (nitrided, splayed caps etc)

I would not suggest a $3000 billet crank in a $250 block, or putting a $575 crank in a $3000 bowtie block.

We have had numerous trucks dyno 575ish RWHp so around 700hp with stock components (block/crank). It will last if you dont race it 100% every weekend. 90% of the time on 15-17psi making 500-550 at the crank. Is it bulletproof no? Will it last forever no? Campbell will tell you the same thing.

Everything is relevant.

Scott buddy wake up. You missed out on a complete ready to run fully balanced rotating assembly because you couldn't afford a 50% deposit, now you are spending thousands more to wait longer and listen to people blow smoke up your skirt... :)

Re: Aluminum Bowtie vs Stock block

Iron Bowtie & A Alum Bowtie Not stocker. Alum Bowtie is stronger then A Stock block. But do you want to spend $1,000 + to save like 100 lbs?

Is this true, the alum block can make big hp numbers like the cast iron blocks and last?
