Re: ALERT: 92 GMC Typhoon #1377 Stolen - nashville tn

I assume the shop is covering the deductable

Yes. Their insurance company is issuing a check on that this week.

A few things I have noticed about this estimate

No mention of fog lights being cracked / replaced
Ash try from rear drivers side (WHY IN THE F*CK WOULD THEY EVEN STEAL THAT?!)
Glove box door (don't know if that is "included" under the "dash"???)
Glove box lock mechanism
Air tube
Scraped Rims on Passenger side from a "curb check"
Cross Member Bar (maybe addressed in supplement?)
Tires (Ask for a type of credit?) They were replaced probably like a year ago so I dunno what leverage I have there.
Inside door jam nicks/scrapes (I wasn't aware of those until yesterday when i was cleaning the truck out).

So I will need to send him pictures of the door jam.
Advice on the remainders? I know a new glovebox door runs ~$60 with emblem. The glovebox lock mechanism and ashtray are petty, but every penny counts!

Out of curiosity did you already check out the motor and drivetrain? Does the truck run? I remember you stating grass underneath the truck like they bottomed out. Has the truck been checked on a lift?

Re: ALERT: 92 GMC Typhoon #1377 Stolen - nashville tn

Motor and drivetrain, no, not yet. There's a "supplemental" claim for that. Visual damage under the truck is the cross member bar is bent on both sides. I just shot an email back to the guy addressing some things that weren't on the initial estimate and requesting a copy of said "supplemental form". His "word" won't suffice with me. I need something in writing/email acknowledging that.

The truck DOES run.
However.
@ cold idle I'm showing about 40psi
@ warm idle, ~20psi
Sounds like shit between 1000-3500 rpms.

I don't want to tow this goddamn thing all around the city to get different "estimates" from shops, but if it comes down to it, I guess I will have no choice.

I am going to see if any of the local "gurus" who know these things better than I do can swing by and check it out and give me their opinions. SOMETHING isn't right, but I don't know exactly what that something (or somethings) may be. I also have some feelers out for any local repair shops that deal in high performance engines to come to the house and check it out vs me having to have it flatbedded to the different places. If it comes down to that, I will just get a truck and trailer and hit 2 or 3 shops in one day.

Re: ALERT: 92 GMC Typhoon #1377 Stolen - nashville tn

2 month later update:
$7489.58

Jeff Scott has been VERY kind enough to do the motor work on it this time around.

Motor is out, torn down and now that insurance and I have settled, will be proceeding with the repairs.

Wow - glad you got that all figured out.

Jeff will make it righ as rain. When do you expect to have it back on the road?

Of course I would always want higher. :) But that amount is fair.
If everything was being done @ actual shop rates and OEM replacement parts, it would have been much higher.
So thanks to the help of a few members here, was able to keep costs down on some replacement parts and labor to keep it from going to the Total Loss stage.
I'm glad we didn't get to that stage because the condition of the truck doesn't warrant a branded title IMO. And more importantly, I know that we would have been going back and forth and back and forth and back and forth on the value of the truck for quite an extended amount of time.
According to Jeff, the target date to get her back on the road is 2014, so I am anxiously waiting.

Main bearings are gone, rod bearings show signs of debris obviously.

Going to go for a replacement crank, magnaflux the block for safety, check align bore, and a few tweaks I was not happy with on original machine work nate had done.

First step is to get crank and rods off to crank guy to do his work, rebalance everything.

Does that mean 1400 on the 20th? That's my birthday... :D

How did you get the amount up from 2.5k to 7.5k?

How did you get the amount up from 2.5k to 7.5k?

The original ~$2500 was for initial physical damage. IE: The window, steering column, alignment, dash, stereo, scratches, paint work, etc.
The engine R&R + parts was $2800.
The remaining ~$2100 was for things missed in the original estimate, such as the cross member, fog light covers, passenger door jam paint work, ashtray, etc.

Fortunately, this isn't my only form of transportation so I didn't have to "quickly settle" with the insurance company. Obviously, insurance companies want to settle as quickly as possible and if it is an only form of transportation, there's a higher probability that you will just take whatever they offer so that you're not stuck after the rental car expires (if there is one). So rather than having to go over it half-assed and quickly, I was able to take the time to make sure everything was accounted for.

nice to see the insurance company didn't bone you. How would you rate your insurance company after this experience?

I don't have any complaints really.
Keep in mind, they are actually getting reimbursed from the shop's insurance company once this is all said and done, so that may have had a play on how they handled it. And of course I have other cars and the house insurance all with the same carrier.

From the first time I spoke with the adjuster, I made sure that I came across firm that this wasn't just a "92 Blazer" and made sure to have as much information as possible that I sent to him voluntarily rather than him asking for it. I wanted to him to know that I wasn't going to quickly settle just to get a grand or two. The main area I thought we were going to run into trouble on was the condition of the engine and what insurance was going to attempt to do with it. Drivetrains aren't something that are the "norm" for an insurance company to address during claims, so was expecting to have a fight on my hands of getting the motor work covered. I immediately sent him copies of all invoices for work done and parts done on the motor along with a picture of the odometer after recovery.

Had we of wound up in total loss territory though, I don't know that the feelings would have been the same. The one time that he brought it up, he attempted to put ACV @ $10,500. However, the policy initially had it insured for $12,500. So if we would have gotten to the "It's going to be totaled" point, we would have been doing some fighting.

On a side note, I have an employee here who is inexperienced with insurance. He has a 2001 2Dr Blazer. He has full coverage and all. He was hit by someone in the parking lot at his apartment complex. Being young and dumb (and not listening to what we were telling him), he was a victim of the "quick settle" with insurance. He didn't really have the balls to question anything insurance was telling him, and was just "okay, okay, okay".

And on a somewhat related side note, one of the Sy's that was stolen recently was short changed by the insurance company for total loss pricing. However, I know that owner was "stuck" because it was their only form of transportation, so I can understand wanting to settle as quickly as possible. However, if I would have been in that situation, I probably would have borrowed a vehicle or bought a clunker while fighting with insurance, because from the sounds of it, it was shorted a few thousand, not a few hundred.

Oh, and if anyone is curious, my insurance company is EMC. http://www.emcins.com/
My agent is Donna Weathers @ Elliott and Associates in Lawrenceburg, TN.
Second time I have had to deal with them (wreck about 10 years ago) and haven't had a problem *yet*.
