Re: 2nd Annual Canadian Syclone Typhoon Nationals, 2005

My truck is finally running well and I there isn't much in my way now but tires are a bit of an issue. I am broke (what's new?) and need tires if I'm to have any fun in the autocross or drags. My left front got so bad it was showing cords on my last trip to Seattle so I had to resort to buying a used tire that didn't match my set just to get home. Now I have three drag radials and one cheapy so my truck won't handle well and it has crap traction in a straight line, as soon as I get on it it just spins the left front (non-drag radial). I'd like to put new tires on my Sy before I come up but I don't get paid until the 10th so that won't be an option. Any chance I could find tires in Edmonton, or have some ordered and waiting for me there?

I think I'm going to go with something that corners better this time insted of drag radials, they're fun in a straight line but horrible in the turns. If anyone has any ideas, shops I should call, or good deals on tires let me know. I'm looking for a pair of 315/35/17's and a pair of 275/40/17's.

How bad are your rear tires? I've been running some real radials on the front and drag radials on the rear. Seems to work fine, I get the best of both worlds that way. I peeled open a front drag radial pretty bad last year at an autocross event. Shouldn't have that problem now though.

I'll make some calls for you, the driver of the sprint car I wrench on runs a tire shop, he can get me some good deals, maybe something good used too.

Re: 2nd Annual Canadian Syclone Typhoon Nationals, 2005

Rears are bald, I've burned them off a bit too much playing around. They float around so much as well, I took a buddy for a ride in my truck (he used to teach at Skip Barber, I'm begging for lessons) and the first thing he said is that the truck never settles in a corner, it always wallows around. You can really feel the soft sidewalls.

Might be worth a try but I was considering just losing the hard launch so I could corner decent, I'm afraid if I leave the DR's on the back that the truck would turn in better but never set in the corner. I have been considering running softer/stickier tires up front to help reduce the understeer problem.

I wish I could find a good site with specs on just about every tire out there, ideally I'd get a set of fronts that had a very slightly larger diameter than the rears, maybe .5 - 1% larger to help reduce the drag from the transfer case.

Re: 2nd Annual Canadian Syclone Typhoon Nationals, 2005

Actually, maybe I should try just a set of fronts right now. The rears are balding in the center, still a bit of tread left on the outside (although after I drive 2000 miles there and back who knows?) but that might just make them good and sticky :)

Glad to hear your getting everything sorted out!! Now you you need to hit up those Seattle guys and drag their asses up here ;)

If your broke I'd just try replacing the fronts for now, Tony seems pretty.

I can get you some nitto drag radials 555R 315/35/17 for $180 ea. (USD) and some 275/40/17 for $170 ea. (USD) or I can also get some BFG G-force tires for the front for around $120 ea. (USD) if you wanted to do that. I can also get many other types of tires at good pricing depending on what you want.

Let me know if I can help.

Re: 2nd Annual Canadian Syclone Typhoon Nationals, 2005

Damn, now weird electrical gremlins, my tailights and blinkers don't work if I have my headlights on and the spacers for my coilovers didn't come in yet so I won't be able to install them this weekend, which means unless I can find a way to get them installed up there my truck is going to still be handling like crap when I get up there. In retrospect I wish I'd never have touched this coilover project, I've yet to see any benefits to it besides weight and my truck handles horribly now and scrapes over every little bump. I just saw a post of mine from nearly six months ago hoping to have my truck back running well soon, I've been so busy I didn't realize I'd lost nearly the whole summer to this crap. Be nice to finally hit the road and enjoy the truck again soon. Post up as soon as anyone figures out what time things start Friday as it will affect what time I start heading up, and whether I'll try to make it by Friday night or Saturday morning.

Check all your grounds for the lamp harness up front. Sounds like something is loose.

I'll have to take a look at the manual and figure out what the hell those are, and where to find them. Thanks for the tip.

I'm taking Friday off work, so if your up here earlier than planned you can come over before we head to the A&W :D

I may do that. Do you happen to have a place I could pull my coilovers and put some spacers on them before the autocross?

Sounds good, but you don't have to get ready for the autocross ;) I guess you never saw this post.........

Well, I just got of the phone with John who's running the Innifail event, and the 100' drags are on Sunday not Saturday, so we can carry on as planned and head down there on Sunday morning.

I'll update the Nats thread with the details later.

Now the bad, the autocross is on Saturday so were gonna miss it :(

All the info for the weekend is in the first post in this thread, I've been updating it all along.

Re: 2nd Annual Canadian Syclone Typhoon Nationals, 2005

I missed that post, I guess it's no big deal though, as much as I was looking forward to the autocross chances are I wouldn't have been able to get it handling decent in time. Hell, I'm still not sure if I'll actually make it, it feels like it's something new every day. I just got back from the track, taking it real easy, I knocked off a 12.005 at 16lbs of boost with no knock, figured that was good enough before heading up to Canada so I headed home and on the way there all of the sudden I hear this horrible grinding/rubbing noise so I pull over. Can't see anything wrong and all my temps and pressures look good so I throw it in first and drove the mile home at 5mph. The noise was still there, I can even feel it through the steering wheel but have no way to identify it currently as it only happens when I'm driving the truck. Whatever it is my bet is it may be expensive so it may kill my chances of driving up to Canada. It's dark now but I'll take a peek tomorrow and see if I can figure it out, maybe it's something in the transfer case, front end, or rear end? Not really sure how I'd identify those issues anyway but maybe I'll get lucky. Yeah, because I get lucky so often....

Yeah, I was dissapointed about the autocross too!!!! Hopefully you can figue out what is causing the grinding/rubbing noise soon!! Maybe Tony, Nolan or Mark can chime in with some input. Might be a good idea to explain the grinding a little more to help figure out what's causing it, did it happen all the way home? did it get worse or better when braking, turning etc.
