2 step experience

I'm considering a 2step (already have the 6al) for next year. The goal being more consistent launches. What has been your experience?

TIA

Re: 2 step experience

The better question is how to trigger it. Ed susgested to use the brakes as the trigger switch.

Re: 2 step experience

To help others who might have questions. Would it be best to put an on/off toggle switch on the 2-step, or just wire it straight to the brake switch? (cause you know I'm not running line lock or a trans brake.)

Re: 2 step experience

to answer your question i'm going to ask one.

what rpm do you want to leave with?

chances are its up over 3k rpm.

now crusing down the road at 60 -80 mph. i kinda doubt your going to be hitting the brakes while holding the throttle down... so most likey i would think you wont need a toggle switch. but having one to disable it for testing purposes couldnt hurt unless whatever you use for a 2 step has a way to easily disable it or raise it up to an rpm you cant reach with the stall of your converter.

Re: 2 step experience

What rpm I'll be leaving with is still iffy. I'll only know this when the truck's back together and running again.

IYeah, I'm sure it will be over 3k, thats for sure. As its going to take a little to spool the T-76. But I'm going to try and keep the 2800 stall I have and see where that gets me.

Re: 2 step experience

Use a toggle switch to activate it when you're at the track and the brake switch to trigger it. When you're not at the track, just turn the toggle switch off.

Stock converter, 2100. The way I read the installation man for that launch control, you have 2 "fixed" pills and, in effect, one adjustable. Burnout pill is activated by switched 12v, Launch (the adjustable one) is the same and when neither sees voltage the race, or high RPM, module is selected.

Re: 2 step experience

Looks like fixed pills range from 3000 to 10800 in 200 rpm increments and it looks like you can "dial" your launch from 1000 to 10900 in 100 rpm increments. So, as an example, I could do a burn-out at 5000 (pill), launch at 2900 (adjustable) and have a rev limiter of 6500 (pill). All taken care of by this magic box. Obviously, unless your name is Ed Hess, the burn-out pill is unnecessary.

Re: 2 step experience

Those numbers were just off-the-wall examples. If you look at the picture you'll see two pills as-well-as the two adjustment knobs, one in 1000 rpm increments and one in 100. Are we looking at the same page?

Re: 2 step experience

The way I interpet this is, you get one adjustable with the knobs, and two fixed useing the "pills".... :2cents:

Horn button. You can keep both hands on the wheel and hold it with your thumb. Doesn't get much more simple.

kinda funny watching these 2 guys create an engineering design plan to implement the useage of a 2 step. lol

listen you guys, forget the pills. go look at the digital 6 box on msd website.

the dig 6 box uses dials to select your 2 step limit

or one of the the digital 7's if you really want to go at it.

these use software via your laptop or an msd handheld programmer (use the laptop)

I completely agree, go with at least the digital 6 and don't mess with the "pills". If you already have a 6a sell it and buy the digital 6 (or the 7 if you want the bells and whistles plus the extra voltage) and be done with it. The 2 step adjustment is made easily with a small screwdriver to any RPM you want.

I forgot to mention, I don't have anywhere near the experience Ed does at drag racing.... I just couldn't get the brake switch to work for me. I kept taking off with my foot still touching the the brake pedal or the switch momentarily hanging causing the two-step to still be engaged on launch. Don't know if it was me or the switch but I got tired of trying to figure it out.

That's why I use the horn button.

Re: 2 step experience

I was fine way back on about post 3. :git: Since I already have a 6al the adjustable 2 step is more within budget. Should I disconnect the horn itself? Sorry...

If it works what the heck, I've done worse.
