Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

i could have sent you some dowel pins

Yeah you can include them with the AC :rotf:

OK, some more progress, not that exciting but all I have to go on out here.

Recently the chassis has been getting built up and I decided to upgrade the bushings on the steering while it was apart. Got the PST kit along with some other components which took a while and caused some delays.

Hopefully it will be a roller by the end of next week and fully painted the week after. I only have 3 weeks in Iraq left so not much else I can do until then.

A-arms blasted and ready for paint...

A-Arms painted and new polyurethane bushings included from PST

Part of the stering kit replacements I think..not 100% sure what it is!!

typhoonsuspension084.jpg

The old bits....

My parents are in the middle of buying a house with a big double garage for me to work on the car for the next few months. I am now getting close to being able to drop the engine in and then deal with all the Gremlins. I can't wait!

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Got some more pics...not that sexy but at least progress is being made.

In order to protect the underside of the cab it has got this coating called stone chip which is rust repellent as well as being sort of rubbery to protect from stone being thrown up and chipping the coating and creating an access point for rust. The truck should never rust after this and the powdercoated chassis.

The chassis is almost a roller once again and I am hoping for some pics by the end of the week when it will get painted leaving next week to refit the cladding and tinted windows and all the weatherstripping (new from LMC Truck) as well as the HID headlights and Euro lenses for the rear.

typhoonstonechip002.jpg

typhoonstonechip005.jpg

typhoonstonechip007.jpg

Rear wheel arch, prob the most susceptible area to rust as the front will have the wheel wells back in eventually. Access wasn't a real highlight of the design of these trucks!!!

typhoonstonechip001.jpg

When the guy was doing the "stonechip" coat he commented on the fact that the underside was actually in good condition. Presumably this was due to the crappy roads in Saudi where the truck is from. The tar and bitumen and rubber from milions of tyres gets thrown up and creates your very own protective coating. Who'd have thought that driving would protect your truck eh?!!

Now to get the engine ready to drop in... am properly shitting myself with that part of the build having never done it before and not having any petrol head mates anywhere near me when I do this. Apologies now for a million bone questions when I get round to it!!

11 days left in Iraq. Very bored now. What a crappy year!

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

Some SERIOUS progress :D

Chassis getting assembled, rear end done:

typhoon015.jpg

Completely disassembled front end, stripped, painted, new parts, reassembled awaiting stock A-Arm coilover setup. No T bars, will rest on a block of wood for transport.

typhoon016.jpg

Front end coming back together - all disassembled as per above. I felt bad he did all that work for the stock steering box as I am puting in a ZQ8 box but thought it would be confusing to try and explain it to him.. He did a great job by the looks of it though...

typhoon017.jpg

Other side of the steering getting put back together...

typhoon018.jpg

You can see the whole chassis under wrap with the tank cleaned and panited. It also has the stonechip ablative anti rust stuff on it as well as the gloss black. Hoepfully this truck will never rust!!

typhoon019.jpg

The chassis will be cleaned and the rolling frame will have the cab assembled by the end of the week, hopefully painted leaving enxt week for cladding fitment and polishing.

I might just leave the engine out and put my new wheels on and drool :D

More to come by the end of the week I hope...

Thanks mate although I wish I had known what it meant and what a headache it would be before I embarked on this folly :D

I got one of those a while ago. It's all sitting in my garage waiting to get put into the truck :D

"While you're there" has cost me $1000s :2cents:

Any and all advice appreciated though - keep it coming! :D

Really? I am pretty sure I got them all with the kit from Mike at RPM. You got a PM :D

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

I HAVE A ROLLER!!!!! Progress at last! I saw my truck today and it is starting to look like a truck again! More importantly, it looks like the guy has done a really good job. It's a little dusty but you can tell it is clean underneath and ther isn't any rust on the truck anymore.

The chassis is going under the truck tomorrow. The body is then getting painted so by next Monday, the truck should look whole again.

I don't know how well the colour shows up on peoples' screens but the white is a brilliant arctic white. I haven't chosen the colour of the cladding but it will be darker than stock to go with the tinted windows. I am looking at colours on Monday as the guy will paint two pieces of cladding for me to compare.

I also got almost all the parts I need from the US to assemble the engine. Jobs this week include getting the upper intake, fuel rail and lower intake blasted and powdercoated grey the same as the engine. After that I need to get my hands dirty. :D

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

You need to ditch that ugly AC box in favor of a heater only model.
All it does is rain over there anyways....

Hah hah hah! yeah, I hear ya! It's rubbish weather at the minute so I am tempted. I will prob take it off and clean it before the engine goes in.

I am still tempted to ditch the a/c but for the sake of completeness I still want it in there. :D

Definitely! Like I said, I'll get a tow hitch fitted so I can drag your broken truck home afterwards!!!

When is that? I am also hoping to be able to drive to Le Mans around 13 June. :D

Fuel tank in - new sender to go into it instead of the one in the pic - I'll do that when I get my hands back on the truck.

The guy had some delays this week so we're not as far forward as I had hoped but the paint is looking damn nice!

I was going to ship it without the torsion bars in resting on wooden blocks but I think that it won't be too much of a problem with the stock A-arm coilovers from E RUE to get them in. They look great so I'll see about getting them in this week.

I am flying out to the USA on 5 Nov into Miami for a trip up to DC then Boston and am back in the UK by the 25th Nov. In the meantime that should be enough time for him to finish the work.

In addition I am getting the stock exhaust manifolds ground so that they fit correctly. Minor job but will help in the long run!

Re: 1992 Typhoon 0539 rebuild

measure your stock length shock at ride height and take a piece of square tube about an inch longer and drill a hole at either end for bolts to slide through, its a great way to make a roller and is easier to strap down cause the suspention does not give

I got around the issue by taking down the coilover conversion kit from E-RUE that I had bought! Man it looks good on the chassis! COILOVER INSTALL

There are loads of things I could be doing while it is in the shop but I just want it out the shop so it can get shipped home and I can start work on it..

One thing I would like to know - the 700R is out and the new prop shaft for the 4L80E is ready. I guess I need to have a trans for the transfer case to attach to as there aren't any places to mount the transfer case correct? If so then I'll need to reinstall the 700R until I can get the 4L80E in it.

In the meantime, I got a new toy....

I need to fix the Ty soon as this thing is just too damn fast on two wheels!

:D
