Wiring the two speed Ford Fan

Howdy,

A question for anyone who is using the Ford fan. I know it came in two speed and one speed versions. I've a two speed from a 95' Taurus 3.8L. Obviously I don't need the two speed. My question, how do you wire the two speed? Do you solder them together and give the voltage for both speed all the time? I did it that way and the fan motor burned down. I disassembled it and it seems to be you can wire it taht way, but in this case I don't know why it went south.

Should I only hot wire the higher speed and leave the lower speed alone...

I use A taurus fan on one of my other cars and only use the high
speed wire and the ground. I have used this for a couple of years
and I have had no problems. Hope this helps.

Make sure you use at least a 60 amp relay and a good ground. You can burn up a electric motor
real quick if you do not wire it correctly.

My stock fan is too close to my Griffin Radiator - ~ ¼" away, so I need to go electric, I guess.

So, anybody got any numbers on how this Taurus fan compares to stock ?

How do U mount it - Do U use our stock shroud ? Where did U get it & how much ?

where did you guys get those relays off of. I tried the auto parts stores around here but the best they could do for me was two 30's a continous selenoid off a ford, and we could not come up with a relay from the tuarus. Any help would be so helpfull I've been pissing with this for a week now.
Thanks

Lynn,

I don't know exact flow numbers, but it said to be one of the most powerfull electric fan around. It should flow around 5000 CFM, if I'm right.

For mounting it, I fabricated a few aluminum pieces, which are securing the fan's shroud to the radiator. I could also keep my stock shrouds, I didn't even have to cut them, so it has a stock apperance.

You have quite a few options to get this radiator. I got my one out off ebay, it's a remanufactured one and it cost around $100. You could also get it from a yunkyard or from a Ford dealer too...

I have a spare ford Taurus fan sitting on my blacony if anyone wants it.....Has a SLIGHTLY cracked shroud (lower corner is a little hurt) but nothing that will impede it's preformance....You cover shipping and $40 and it's yours......

BTW I seem to remember seeing some number posted a while back the the amperage draw was only high at initial startup...something like Low taking 37 amps to start and then 15 amps continuous....although those could be a little off they sound about right.....as for high I dunno.

Autozone sells a nice little electric thermostat that has an internal relay strong enough to handle the low side of the fan. I would suggest using that to control low, and then using a larger relay wired in to control high (off a second thermostat maybe?)....There are an infinite numbre of ways to control the speeds, just remember to use a nice heavy duty relay (I use ones from PartsExpress.com They are like 30 amp continuouos, and 60 am surge or something like that....Also partsexpress.com has some fairly nice circuit breakers that are like 40 amp or so, and those seem to be doing well.
