Re: Who daily drives there truck?
I daily drove 1456 from '01 to '08. My plan was to DD my '93 S-10 and use the Sy as a toy. However, the S-10 wasn't nearly as much fun to drive, which led to it sitting, which led to problems, so it then wasn't running when I actually did need it. Rather than fix two trucks, I just fixed the Sy and let the S-10 sit and get worse.
I was seeing a girl on the other side of the state, so I was driving back and forth every weekend. I bought it March '01 with 77k, and by the middle of '05 I had 180k on it (see
http://www.syty.net/forums/showthread.php?t=29721). That's ~25k/year average, but we had actually gotten married in '03 and I was unemployed for a while, so my mileage dropped off considerably halfway through that time. I was probably averaging 35k/year or more at first.
Honestly, I'm fairly impressed with 1456's performance. I started with a good chunk of miles on it, then put a bunch more on, even through Michigan winters. I did replace a lot of parts (including the front diff, a trans rebuild, and pretty much every belt-driven accessory), but that doesn't even seem that bad compared to some trucks here. It stayed stock (still 2-bar to this day), but I drove it to get every ft.lb. of torque out of it. Even after I had 180k on it, it was still my DD another 4 years before the engine went. Hell, I bought it in upper-central Wisconsin and drove it straight home (500 miles down through Chicago and back up to GR) without even thinking about it. I cringe thinking about how much I spent on gas (I still remember the first time a fillup cost me over $75, and I found an old receipt in the console where I paid $1.11/gal for premium) and tuneup parts in that time.
I now have a reliable new DD and a motorcycle, so the plan for 0187 is for it to be together and reliable enough that I can drive it whenever I want, but that I'll never actually
need to DD it.
