Which distributor do you guys recommend?

Trying to decide on a new distributor to replace my MSD pro billet. Just wondering which one you guys recommend. Thank you.

Why replace the mSd?

I believe it to be at fault to some of the glitches that i've been experiencing. I have also read a bunch of times on here that other members don't like theirs due to problems that they are experiencing.

Also, it's one of those things I can eliminate off the "suspect parts list".

Most of the time it's usually something else, get the auto zone one for the stocker

Re: Which distributor do you guys recommend?

So it doesn't matter what your set-up is the stocker is stout enough to handle up to the 10s.

$150 for a new CARDONE at AUTOZONE and just use a MSD cap and rotor and I should be good.

Thanks for all the help.

You could also just rebuild the distributor you have. Last time I did that it was cheaper buying a GM pickup coil and ignition module, than buying an autozone one with most likely aftermarket parts.

Mechanically its just a gear, internal shaft that spins, and magnets. Electronically its just a pickup coil, ignition module and cap/rotor. I have even read the MSD cap/rotor is worse than the brass contact ones at autozone. I am not sure about if that is true.

Re: Which distributor do you guys recommend?

I run a rebuilt that I got from NAPA. I use Good Stuff NAPA cap and rotor. No issues. However...

Check the gear. I won a round at the track just recently because the guy had a composite gear and it stripped. Motor died at the line. Personally I don't like the brass gear either. Check the wear pattern. It should be fairly well centered on the gear.

Not to highjack the thread but,has anyone here had a problem with the composite gear giving up on them? I only ask because I am about to remove the dizzy and change out the gear to a composite one. I do have Vortec heads with a modified intake.

Re: Which distributor do you guys recommend?

I actually thought about rebuilding the pro billet that I have now because the reluctor wheel is always coated in rust. I checked on MSD's website for replacement parts but that wasn't an option. I am not sure if the rust messes with the signal or not but it's enough to drive me insane.

That PROCOMP is sounding more and more inviting. Do you guys have an actual part number just incase?

See my post above yours. I, personally, would not use a composite gear. I'm planning on removing my dist soon just to check the gear.

I run a CARDONE from Autozone. Have it since 2006. I swapped to the composite gear back in 2008 and have not had issue with it yet. The lifetime warranty on the ignition module is worth it in itself.

I also use NAPA cap+rotor.

I too have the lifetime on the module but don't believe they will swap it for a new one if it tested good but i believe it to be at fault.

They will...ask for the Store manager anf be nice. Most of the time they will take care of it. If not, go down the street to another AZ.

They did exchange it for me just like you said. Thanks for the vote of confidence.

i actually went to three different AZ's before I got the courage to demand a new nodule but in a polite manner.
