Wheel Hop

Got Boost?
Ok, first off, I got my new best time at the track Sunday afternoon of 12.926 @ 103.060 with a 1.904 sixty foot. I am in some serious need of help/suggestions in launching techniques. Typically I would use the Todd A tech and I never had any problems. After adding a delta gate I'm now spinning all 4 tires and getting a nasty wheel hop. So I launch with no boost. 60 foots are in the 2.xx area. Launch with 5 to 10 lbs and nasty wheelhop. But my thoughts are this is where my best 60's would be. If I leave at 3lbs I seem to be consistant at 1.9s. So long story short, what can I do to get rid of the wheel hop and keep traction to get my 60 foots better?
Thanks all

His truck is basically stock. He has and aux. cooler, and some massive chip work done. I was in the opposite lane when he made that pass. I ran a 13.49@100.01 with a 1.94 60ft. I can't believe how good his truck runs.

I would like to thank Gabe and Jim, for all the pointers, they gave me yesterday!

As said, truck is basically stock. Motor and tranny have never been removed, just rolled 129k on the way home
Fuel pump, regulator, K&N, chain tie down for motor, chip programming, deltagate and aux intercooler. Anything else that may have been done is insignifigant cause I'd have remembered it
So it is basically a stock truck, but this wheel hop is killing my 60 foots...

Hey guys I am new to the whole sy/ty thing. I see alot guys speaking on the engine tye downs. What is the reason. Does it help put the hp to the ground better? Please forgive me if I sound brand new but , honestly it's because I am.

I was running 36 up front and 30 in the back. Have nitro drop shocks on the back. At least that is what I think they are... Then have Bilsteins up front.. I can try playing with air pressure
what is the safest I could run difference wise though...Don't mind tearing up tires, just don't want to tear up transfercase

Your hop issues could be a result of a few things. Got a nice new paved street near home you can try launching on? Give that a shot and see if it was track related.
How are your leaf spring bushings? How about your u-bolts, can you tighten them relatively easy? If you can, a new, stout set might tighten the rear up.
Shocks are are also suspect, Bilstiens work for me.
Take care,

You didn't mention shocks. If you still have the factory air shocks, that's the problem. They tend to bounce and hop at the slightest opportunity. If that's what you have, a good set of gas shocks on the rear will make you very happy with launch and ride.

I am using Nitro(i think) drop shocks in the rear. Put them on about 2 yrs ago. I have a 1.5in lowering blocks in the back which is why I think I used those instead of the bilsteins. So is the general consensus that it would be a good idea to use Bilsteins in the back?
Tthat is what I have on the front. HD or the sport? Which one would be best? Ride quality is not my biggest concern. I'm more concerned with handling and keeping the tires on the road.

Hey Gabe,

Great numbers. You might try the Bilstein HD shocks. I switched to these recently and they seem to be a good compromise between control and ride. They are a big improvement over the what was on before. The Bilstein Sport shocks are stiffer. Some guys have said they are too stiff.

I'm also running Caltrac bars and flexiform springs, and these work well. I'm still experimenting with the amount of preload I should dial in to optimize the control and ride. These are more $$$, however.

Tell me about your chip work. I've been down that road recently. Also, how much boost are you running. Take care.

Since I prefer a stiffer ride sounds like the sport shocks are probally the way to go. Don't want fiberglass springs, but I think I should probally replace poly bushings on the rear stock springs.
Caltracks, you are the 3rd person to mention that... That would probally help. Guess I'll upgrade all the rear suspension stuff first then see how it launches. Tracks don't open up here till Feb 3rd so I've got a few months now before I can even run it again...
I'm running anywhere from 18-20lbs of boost and the chip work was all done by Jim Sloan. I can't tell any more cause I don't know jack about chip programming.
