Turbo trade interest

I have a PTE52 with .85 exhaust housing that I am somewhat interested in trading down for. Reason being, now that I am doing more autoX, the 52 with a .85 housing is a bit to big for the low mph runs. Im finding myself riding the throttle through the brakes to stay spooled and of course I want more low end response.

Looking at the PTE44 with .63 housing to swap out with. If you have one that you would consider trading for, let me know. Turbo swap only...not the downpipe.

My turbo has a polished housing (its not perfect all in the tight corners, but its still really nice on where you see it) and a coat of steel-it on the hotside. I do need to take a more recent pic as over time the steel-it has cooked off a bit and you can see spots coming up through. I can re-coat it if needed.

OR... which Im not quite sure yet if it fits... I'll trade out the .85 housing for a .63 housing. I need to look more into that though to see if the 52 compressor wheel will accept a .63 housing.

Re: Turbo trade interest

Welp. Scratch that idea. I thought PTE made a .63 syty housing available on the 44s. Just got confirmation that they only do .85s, which is why all of you that have checked out your 44 you all see .85 housings.

Time to think about Plan B....

Re: Turbo trade interest

When the day comes that the motor pops, then it's rebuild time. Until then, pushing the stock internals until they are ready to go on their own terms is the way Im going.....not doing a piston swap.

A ball bearing turbo would help but that is not exactly a cheap solution. More air flow from the heads/cam would also help spool up as well.

Re: Turbo trade interest

What stall is in there? You def want to get a smaller turbo or a faster spooler upper.... Loosening the TC will make it slow out of all the bends.

Not the way most people usually go :D

I do have a built set of L35s. Just need to be drilled/tapped for screw in studs.

2800 stall. Remember, Ive had this combo now for a good 5+ years. I wasnt doing autoX until recent, so what I have on the truck wasnt put on there purposeful to run autoX with....hence why Im interested in changing my setup for better performance.

Consider too, how many others on here or anywhere have given detailed feedback on good setups specifically for autoX in our trucks? No one that I know. Yes, there is a handful of people who have ran autoX, but not consistently and mainly for spur of the moment fun. At this moment, Im about the only person on this forum that is actively competing in SCCA races and changing my setup to improve performance. My truck is no where near a perfect setup for autoX, and I know this. Hopefully my mistakes and experiences will one day benefit others who want to take the same path.

Re: Turbo trade interest

I guess the closest to your aims is Adam / HighPerformance Trucks with the manual T56 etc etc...

Your goal is to have max tq out of bends and apply it rather than having a laggy spool - is that the same as him? I guess if he is doing time trials then that's similar right?

It will be interesting to see what you end up with.

Eh, Adam's truck is extreme built. I dont have his budget or do I want to go to his level of racing....at least, not in any near future I can see. He isnt exactly doing 50 second autoX courses either. He is doing more endurance track/road racing with time trial stuff. Not to say that there isnt some shared aspects between the 2.....but I cant really take his feedback of what basically is a fully built race truck and apply it to mine directly on a budget build. His truck is nowhere near anything stock anymore.

My truck revolves around budget and anything bolt-on. Ultimate goal is coilovers, 4 link, and more than likely making a turbo change and lots more tuning. Ive kicked around the use of alky as well. I do have the set of L35s which I know would help out, but my motor has never been opened. I kinda lean on the side of "dont break what isnt broken" when it comes to doing the swap.

Re: Turbo trade interest

BTW, side note. PTE just told me that they no longer sell the PTE44 anymore. They stopped production 6 months ago. Now, not sure if he just meant the syty specific housing or the PTE44 altogether.

Re: Turbo trade interest

Let me check with a buddy of mine. He had a 44 with a .63 housing.. not sure what the Downpipe/exhaust is since it was on ATR headers.

** Nope he sold it it and it was the buick style housing **

Probably a buick turbo, which is what they made that combo in (and why I thought it was available for us). According to the rep at PTE, they never made a 44 with .63 housing specific to syty. Only the .85 housing.

Re: Turbo trade interest

Some more side info. The PTE44 uses a 58mm inducer compressor wheel with a 57mm exducer turbine wheel while the PTE55 uses a 62mm inducer compressor wheel and 62mm exducer turbine wheel.

That would probably give me about 400-600 rpm quicker spool up Im guessing even with the .85 housing on the 44? Im not a turbo expert, so feedback is welcomed on that area.

Re: Turbo trade interest

Your PTE 52 uses a 59mm 60-1 (sometime rounded upto 60mm) compressor wheel. The pte44uses a clipped 60-1 wheel. Your pte52 uses a larger 62mm exhaust wheel vs the 57mm pte44 (t31).

FYI the pte60 uses 60-1 with the t31 57mm exhaust wheel. It's not obvious the pte60 is a smaller turbo than pte52.
